Your role as Senior Software Developer, Backend
The Senior Software Developer, Backend (Python) joins a dedicated team that translates requirements from a large partner into capabilities built directly into the Dialogue platform. The guiding principle is one codebase: every feature driven by this partnership, whether it involves eligibility, data sharing, billing, or the embedded app experience, ships as part of Dialogue’s core product so it can be maintained, extended, and offered to future clients.
You will work primarily on Dialogue’s central membership, eligibility and billing registry, and the surrounding backend services, within a Python microservices architecture that is actively migrating from a legacy framework to FastAPI. The team is cross-functional: you will collaborate daily with mobile developers, DevSecOps, data developers, product managers, QA, and the partner’s technical teams to design, build, and operate the backend systems that power the integration.
What you'll be doing
-
You will own backend deliverables across the full development lifecycle, from technical design through deployment and production operations. The mandate spans new feature development, as well as maintenance of the embedded module. Day-to-day you will:
-
Build and maintain RESTful APIs in Python (FastAPI) that serve the partner-facing integration endpoints. Every endpoint you build becomes part of the Dialogue platform, not a one-off integration.
-
Evolve the eligibility and membership domain model that underpins partner onboarding and member management.
-
Deliver new platform capabilities driven by partner requirements such as direct billing integrations, eligibility API enhancements, and data-sharing pipelines, while ensuring these features are designed generically enough to become part of Dialogue’s standard offering for all clients.
-
Write accurate, testable code and maintainable test suites. The team uses FastAPI’s TestClient (ASGI) for integration tests, with dependency injection for mocking auth and tenant context. Unit tests run at build time. Automated tests verify that the embedded experience is not broken by changes from either side of the integration.
-
Participate in technical design and code review. Write and review technical design documents to align the team on clear solutions. Improve the skills and effectiveness of teammates through code review, documentation, and direct guidance.
-
Operate services in production on AWS EKS (Kubernetes). Backend services are containerized and deployed to Kubernetes clusters provisioned via Terraform. You will monitor service health using Datadog, manage feature rollouts with LaunchDarkly, and participate in incident response.
We'd love to hear from you if you have
-
Have 5 or more years of experience with distributed systems, API design, relational modeling, or database administration.
-
Are proficient in Python and have hands-on experience with FastAPI or similar async web frameworks (Django, Flask, aiohttp).
-
Have strong experience with PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy ORM, including relational modeling, query optimization, and migration management.
-
Have worked with cloud infrastructure on AWS, including containerized deployments on Kubernetes (EKS), and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
-
Have a track record of architecting, organizing, and shipping significant software initiatives. You break down systems and product development work into incremental changes and consistently deliver value.
-
Are comfortable with asynchronous task processing tools such as Celery with RabbitMQ or Redis, which the team uses for background job processing.
-
Communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues. The role involves close collaboration with mobile developers, DevSecOps, data developers, product managers, QA, and partner technical teams.
-
Experience with CI/CD pipelines (CircleCI), observability tooling (Datadog), and feature flag systems (LaunchDarkly) is an asset.
Dialogue is building a permanent, dedicated team to deliver on the priorities of a large partner but with a deliberate architectural philosophy: every capability this team builds ships as part of the Dialogue platform. The backend services you create and maintain will determine whether millions of members can seamlessly access virtual healthcare through an embedded experience inside their existing apps. At the same time, those services will strengthen Dialogue’s core product for all current and future clients. This is foundational work at the intersection of partnership delivery and platform engineering, and it sits at the heart of Dialogue’s growth strategy.
Please note that as we serve customers across Canada, bilingualism is an asset for this position. You may be required to communicate in French and English.
