Teacher at Bernard Constant Community School on the
James Smith Cree Nation

The East Central First Nations Education Authority (ECFNEA) is committed to providing the

highest-quality Educational Services by our people, for our people. The Authority focuses on

developing and implementing Culture and Cree Language Programs to address the needs of the

First Nation communities it serves: the Chakastaypasin Band of the Cree Nation, the James

Smith Cree Nation, and the Peter Chapman Band.

The ECFNEA’s facilities include the Bernard Constant Community School located on James Smith
Cree Nation (JSCN) and a sub-office in Nipawin, Saskatchewan.

The School
The Bernard Constant Community School is a dynamic Pre-K-Grade 12 school serving
approximately 440 students. The school is supported by a professional staff of more than 30
teachers and a full complement of support staff. The focus of the Bernard Constant Community
School is Trauma-sensitive Programming, with a full complement of a Wellness Team, a
comprehensive Cree Language Program for all grades and divisions, along with a Land-based
Learning Program, a Cultural Program, a Sports Academy Program, and a Treaty Essential
Learning Program. Applicants who can speak the Cree Language and can display knowledge of,
and working experience in, the other noted areas will be considered assets.

There are currently no accommodations available within the community. Teachers travel into
the community from local towns and cities such as Melfort and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Position Title - Grade 6 Teacher Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the Grade 6 Teacher are as follows:

conduct formal and informal assessments of students;
contribute to the positive image of the school and James Smith Cree Nation;
create an atmosphere of innovation, teamwork, and creativity within the team;

demonstrate a history of positive relations with students, parents, and staff;
facilitate learning activities both within the classroom setting and outdoor land-based

activities;

incorporate appropriate technology and media in lesson planning;
nurture, support and guide young learners;
participate in co-curricular school activities;
prepare course timelines and materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and

handouts;

prepare engaging lessons and interactive learning activities/materials;

prepare lesson plans with clear objectives that follow the Saskatchewan curriculum standard

and the ability to adapt curriculum with Indigenous content;

promote and maintain high standards of behaviour, respect and safety within the classroom;
strong classroom management skills using trauma-informed practices is an asset; and
support families with open, ongoing communication.

Position Qualifications
The successful applicant should have the following abilities, skills and qualifications:

effectively communicates with staff, parents and students;

fosters school mission, values and sense of community through student-centred decisions;
maintains professionalism through all school interactions and activities;
models a strong work ethic as well as high standards of commitment;
must have an awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture;
understands and uses current literacy, numeracy practices and teaching strategies; and
values continual growth and development of school programs and curriculum.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess:

a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate and a First Aid Certificate would be an

asset;

a valid driver’s license;
possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in education; and
possess or be in application of a valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate.

Preference will be given to existing employees and to members of the First Nations participating
in the East Central First Nation Education Authority.

Salary and Benefits
Salary/Wages follow the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Salary Grid. Extended health
benefits, vacation or holiday pay, and personal/sick leave may be available depending on
contract terms.
