Course Information

Part 1: Elementary Drama
In this part of the course, students investigate approaches to learning and inquiry in and through drama education, with a focus on drama as an instructional strategy and learning vehicle. This will include philosophies and strategies, curriculum planning, and assessment in drama. Students will explore the aims of drama education; role of the teacher in the drama classroom and in facilitating drama sessions; creative drama; the use of improvisation and storytelling; and developing major projects with students.

Part 2: Elementary Dance
This part focuses on curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment in elementary dance education; and provides opportunities to explore the creative process through theoretical perspectives and practical applications. Using a critical lens, students will cultivate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to develop and successfully implement a dance program to support the diverse needs of PJI students. (0.25 credit) total for Drama and Dance

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Curriculum and Pedagogy in Elementary Dance & Drama – PJI. The instructor will guide teacher candidates in understanding how to plan, assess, and deliver Dance and Drama programming that meets the learning needs of diverse students and promotes creative expression, collaboration, and embodied learning in alignment with Ontario's Grade 1-8 Arts Curriculum.

Prepare and deliver course content aligned with approved learning outcomes and curriculum expectations.
Facilitate interactive instruction that emphasizes improvisation, movement, creative play, and project-based activities.
Introduce instructional strategies and assessment approaches for both Drama and Dance education.
Support teacher candidates in exploring inclusive and integrated arts practices, with a focus on curriculum connections and classroom implementation.
Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work.
Collaborate with other arts instructors, as appropriate.
Submit final grades and maintain communication with the Teacher Education Office or course coordinator, if applicable.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Dance and/or Drama, Curriculum Studies, or a closely related field.
Familiarity with Ontario Arts Curriculum (Grades 1-8) and demonstrated experience teaching Dance and Drama at the Primary, Junior, or Intermediate level.
Experience teaching or designing integrated arts/cross-curricular arts activities.
Knowledge of assessment & evaluation, differentiated instruction, and inclusive arts education practices in the elementary Music classroom.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
OCT Specialist Qualification in Dance and/or Drama or equivalent academic/professional expertise.
Collaborative experience with multi-disciplinary arts teams.
A record of effecting teaching performance in post-secondary education (particularly), and/or Additional Qualifications (AQ courses), and/or facilitating teacher professional learning (e.g. through arts professional associations.
Active in research related to arts education.
