Purpose:
At Victoria University, you will discover several unique opportunities - the academic advantages of Canada's leading university, the rich diversity of a big city and the close-knit social and intellectual community of a small liberal arts college. Reporting to the Associate Dean(s) and supervised by the Assistant Dean, Equity & Wellness the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the living environment in four residence buildings, which houses over 800 students. In addition, the RLC will promote community development, academic success, and personal growth of residents through program development and implementation, and through the management of a team of 24 residence staff members, of whom 5 are Senior Dons.
The RLC will respond to crisis situations and play an active role in case management of students in difficulty. Duties include provision of student support, coordination of individual meetings with students, offering appropriate referrals, developing success programming in the residence, investigating policy violations, enforcing the residence occupancy agreement and discussing disciplinary action. The position requires frequent meetings with Residence Government and other student leaders on campus. The RLC also works closely with various campus departments to ensure a high quality experience for Victoria residents, and maintain and expand the excellent student life experience at Victoria.
The position is required to live on campus and participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
Duties:
Student Support
- Facilitate community development through the creation, implementation and evaluation of programming events aimed at promoting academic success, personal growth, wellness and community responsibility among residence students.
- Maintain current knowledge about various offices and resources at Victoria and the University of Toronto in order to assist students with a wide variety of problems or issues within the university and larger community.
- Provide resource information, counseling, support and referral for residents.
- Be a key member of the Crisis Response team for Victoria College and act as a case manager for students living in residence and experiencing difficulty.
- Represent and advocate for students as necessary and appropriate.
- Meet on an “as needed” basis with students involved in policy violations or complaints.
- Investigate damages in the residence buildings and make recommendations for billing or appropriate disciplinary action.
- Work with and advise all members of the four residence building councils, and the individual floor/house councils.
- Work with the Campus Life Coordinator and implement student leadership workshops for Victoria University students.
- Develop, plan and implement (with the Residence Dons and in consultation with the Assistant Dean, Equity & Wellness and Associate Deans) the Residence Orientation for first year residents, held over the Labour Day weekend and following week, each year.
- Assist with the development of residence promotional materials and participate in recruitment activities (U of T Day, Campus Days, Open Vic).
- Design and implement a comprehensive residence curriculum that fosters student engagement, personal growth, and community development within the residential environment with measurable learning outcomes.
Residence Dons
- Design and implement a process for the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of graduate and undergraduate student Dons, and Senior Dons in consultation with the Assistant Dean, Equity & Wellness and Associate Dean(s) and the Dean of Students.
- In consultation with the Assistant Dean, Equity & Wellness and Associate Dean(s)develop, plan and implement the Don training program beginning mid-August every year.
- With the Associate Dean(s), supervise and evaluate the work of the residence Dons.
- Meet on a regular basis with the Don staff together and in building teams for information exchange, problem solving, program planning and staff development activities.
- Provide resource information, counseling, support and referrals for Don staff.
- Meet with the Dons individually to address concerns and to discuss particular issues that have arisen with students.
- Work with the Dons to investigate policy violations. Address and resolve resident behavioural problems and decide upon appropriate disciplinary actions in consultation with supervisors and managers.
- Collect Dons’ weekly log sheets and follow up on incidents, questions or problems outlined in them.
- Provide a weekly summary of log sheets and incidents to the Associate Dean(s) .
- Establish and implement a Don-on-duty schedule and duty procedures for the residences.
- Share in provision of 24 hour/7 day a week emergency, crisis, and incident response, accessed by cell phone.
Dean of Students Office
- Has responsibilities for proposing budget requests and handling expenditures within the residence life portfolio, with oversight from the Associate Dean of Students, Business & Operations.
- Work with the rest of the residence and programming staff to develop and implement residence policies, residence programs, and new initiatives on campus with oversight from the Associate Dean of Students.
- Assist with summer residence offers, room assignments and general office duties.
- Assist with the development of residence informational materials, including residence newsletters and the Residence Handbook.
- Maintain a database of policy violations and disciplinary responses.
- Work with Residence Services staff and Dons to implement a 48-hour check-out process and organize the winter closure of residence.
Other
- Work with the Manager of Residence Services Residence Desk staff, Security staff and Physical Plant staff to solve problems and communicate information to the Dons and residents.
- Address maintenance and housekeeping complaints with the appropriate managers.
- Serve on Victoria University and University of Toronto committees as needed and make presentations to staff and students as requested. These may include: Student Life Professionals, Safety & Security Committees and working groups, Alcohol Policy Review Committees, Student Space, Allocation Committees, Residence Networks, etc.
- Attend and participate in provincial and national conferences where appropriate, in particular the Ontario Association of College and University Housing Officers (OACUHO) and Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS).
- Ensure that appropriate crisis intervention procedures are in place and understood by all residence life staff.
- Keep the Associate Dean(s) and Dean of Students well informed of all residence problems and issues.
- Ensure that residence government leaders understand the university’s alcohol policy and how it applies to student events and provide advice and direction in the development of party proposals and approves those proposals that adhere to the guidelines.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications Required:
Education
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree is a strong asset.
Experience
Must possess at least three years' related experience, in a residence or comparable setting; demonstrated experience and existing skills in counselling, programming and managing discipline cases in an undergraduate residence community; experience with University of Toronto procedures and protocols an asset. Past supervisory experience is required.
Other:
Must have proven leadership in a university or related setting, supervisory experience and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated conflict resolution skills are essential. Must be comfortable working in an unpredictable and often stressful environment, both independently and as part of a team of diverse individuals. Must be flexible, able to be firm and assertive when needed, patient, possess good judgment, display discretion and diplomacy. Must demonstrate an ability to manage a complex set of competing priorities. Must demonstrate an interest in students who come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and have an ability to relate well to their needs and concerns. Must be highly organized and detail-oriented. Must be able to innovate and improve programs and policies related to residence life and residence operations. Must demonstrate an interest in, and commitment to, improving equity on campus.
Strong computer skills required, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel) and desktop publishing.
