JOB SUMMARY: The Cultural Language Instructor – Bicentennial reports Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Supervisor of the Six Nations Child Care Centre.
Under the direction of the Child Care Supervisor, the Cultural Language Instructor is responsible for facilitation of an integrated cultural enriched, safe play-based, childcare centred learning environment for the children six months to six years, parents, staff and students within the child care setting and supporting child: staff ratios on a daily basis.
The Cultural Language Instructor will ensure the implementation of “How Does Learning Happen”, Excerpts from ELECT document, and comply with Six Nations Elected Council Employment Policy, the Six Nations Council Health and Safety Guidelines, Six Nations Child Care Procedures and Guidelines and Parent Handbook.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a Cultural Language Diploma from recognized community college or Graduate from Secondary School with focus on language and culture with experience working with children ages 0-6 years
- Must be at least 18 years
- Will be knowledgeable about Six Nations Haudenosaunee/Iroquois culture and traditions
- Will have the ability to teach primary words/phrases from either Mohawk or Cayuga Language
- Thoroughly familiar with relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines, i.e., requirements as set out by the Child Care Early Years Act
- Must have a valid certificate in First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain
- Must submit and ensure immunizations are up to date
- Must submit a health assessment according to Child Care Early Years Act
- Must pass a criminal records/vulnerable sector check
- Must sign and submit an offence of declaration every calendar year in which a vulnerable sector check is to be obtained
- Will have Food Handlers Certificate or willing to obtain

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Supervisor of the Six Nations Child Care Centre.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
Under the direction of the Child Care Supervisor, the Cultural Language Instructor is responsible for facilitation of an integrated cultural enriched, safe play-based, childcare centred learning environment for the children six months to six years, parents, staff and students within the child care setting and supporting child: staff ratios on a daily basis.
The Cultural Language Instructor will ensure the implementation of “How Does Learning Happen”, Excerpts from ELECT document, and comply with Six Nations Elected Council Employment Policy, the Six Nations Council Health and Safety Guidelines, Six Nations Child Care Procedures and Guidelines and Parent Handbook.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Introduce Native Language words and phrases following weekly themes identified with children’s programs.
- Develop and create learning resource materials.
- Plan, implement and evaluate teaching circles for children of all playgroups.
- Provide exposure to the Native Language and Culture through craft making, singing songs, dancing, finger plays, legend telling and other age-appropriate activities.
- Provide informal exposure to Native Language during transitions, lunch, washroom and snack routines.
- Develop culturally appropriate gardens with assistance from other staff as needed.
- Arrange for visitors, guests, speakers and trips that relate to cultural awareness.
- Act as a resource for parents, caregivers and staff.
- Applying safety procedures and handling emergencies appropriately
- Keep a daily record of activities, new words and progress.
- Practice/implement the ELECT (Early Learning for Each Child Today) framework or any future childhood developmental tools that may arise while in the position and How Does Learning Happen(HDLH); or any future childhood developmental tools that may arise while in the position
- Observing individual child’s development and referring concerns to the coordinator
- Following behaviour management guidelines
- COMMUNICATIONS & LIAISON:
- Working cooperatively with all staff enhancing relationships with community resources and collaboration with existing programs and services on and off Six Nations of the Grand River communities
- Maintaining a team approach to resolving such issues, conflicts and problems that may arise in the process of providing support services
- Maintaining confidentiality as per Six Nations Council Employment Policy.
- Provide daily communication with parents
- Assist staff/clients with children as necessary
- Attend staff, parent and other meetings/activities
Any other related duties as assigned by the Child Care Supervisors which include, but is not limited to, participation in the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan, Pandemic Plan of Response and the Trauma Events Response Team (TERT).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Patience and flexibility working with a variety of age groups
- Works in a climate-controlled environment accept for daily outdoor supervision/interaction with children
- Some after-hours participation for staff meetings, parent meetings and other planned activities
- Meeting ratios when required during “unscheduled” shutdowns as per Six Nations Council Personnel Policy
- Flexibility working evening and weekend hours
- Prioritize and work independently
- Cell phones are not to be used during work hours unless authorized by the coordinator (emergency, trips)
- Name tag is required/worn daily-a charge will be added if lost/stolen (new name tag located at Human Resources)
- Maintain confidentiality

Other Preferred Qualifications
- Will have excellent communication skills; verbal and written, as well as good interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Haudenosaunee culture, language and traditions of Six Nations
- Will be willing to participate in training and upgrading.
- Preference be given to Six Nations band members.
IMPACT OF ERROR:
Errors in judgment and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, and public confusion, serious impacts on clients and staff, and legal liability to self and to Six Nations Council.
CONTROL:
Works within the organizational structure and administrative policy and procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River Employment Policy, Child Care Services and the Six Nations Social Services values, principles and Mission statement.
Works within the policies and procedures established through service contract by the Six Nations Council and the funding agency (Ministry of Education) and within the legislation of the Early Years Act.
