Senior Research Associate Job Posting

Well Living House at Unity Health Toronto is an action research centre that focused on advancing generative health services for Indigenous peoples in three priority areas: Indigenous population health assessment and response; interrupting anti-Indigenous racism in health services; and facilitating the application of Indigenous approaches, knowledges, and practices to wellbeing.

Well Living House is part of Unity Health Toronto’s recently launched Indigenous Health Research Stream and is built from a foundation of more than two decades of collaborative work between Indigenous health researchers, Indigenous service providers and Indigenous community Grandparents. Well Living House is committed to using and protecting Indigenous knowledges, languages, information and ways of working in all that we do.

The Well Living House research team is looking for a Senior Research Associate to co-lead our interrupting anti-Indigenous racism in health services research stream, which includes the design and testing of: i) novel anti-bias and simulation training for health care professional and ii) tools to assess and reduce organizational racism. The Senior Research Associate is responsible for overseeing, tracking, and conducting research and dissemination activities involved in the design, delivery, and documentation of multiple research projects. This includes leading the production of project reports and publications. They will oversee study administration and must have an ability to adhere to Indigenous research protocols and work with WLH Grandparents, Scientists, Staff, and Indigenous Community partners to carry out various aspects of community partnered research.

Weekly hours: Full time

Length of Position: 1 year contract with possibility of extension

Start Date: asap

Location: Well Living House at Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, ON

Responsibilities

Co-lead the design and implementation of research protocols designed to test interventions to address anti-Indigenous racism in health services, including RCT evaluation of Indigenous Cultural Safety Training for health care professionals and system level assessment of hospital complaints processes..

Co-lead the advancement of the Well Living House governance platforms, research methodologies, policies and procedures with input from Counsel of Grandparents and WLH Leadership Circle

Co-lead preparation of research proposals and protocols

Management of project implementation, including tracking of timelines and deliverables

Co-lead project reporting and publications

Co-lead project fund management including development and tracking of research study budgets

Liaise with and support First Nations, Inuit and Métis community and Indigenous health service research partners

Maintain confidentiality of information and records in accordance with standards of ethics and principles of Indigenous data governance

Chair research meetings

Support writing and editing academic manuscripts, presentations, community research reports, and additional knowledge translation products

Oversee the development and negotiation of research agreements and contracts with outside parties

Oversee in recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of research staff employed by the research program

Other duties as defined by the Principal Investigator

Qualifications

PhD in Public Health, Health Services Research, or related field OR Indigenous Health Professional (MD) with relevant post-graduate qualifications and experience

5 years research experience, including experience in public health and epidemiology, design and implementation of research protocols, preparation of manuscripts, and results presentation to academic and community audiences

Minimum 5 years experience living or working in an Indigenous context

Experience with Indigenous community-based and/or community-driven research approaches and Indigenous research protocols

Strong communication (verbal/written), interpersonal, and leadership skills are required

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload

Ability to apply an Indigenous worldviews and/or critical social theory to the design, analysis, and reporting of research.
