Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. Reporting to the Manager, Rail Service Design, our Service Design – Short Term Modifications team is seeking one (1) Senior Rail Operations Advisor to provide rail passenger transportation services in conformity with corporately approved standards.
What will I be doing?
Manage and optimize the service plan equipment cycling and deployment of rail vehicles to ensure operational readiness and balanced asset usage.
Identify and implement effective solutions under compressed timeliness to maintain service continuity and operational excellence.
Collaborate with Maintenance, Operations, and Capital Projects teams to align equipment performance with service delivery goals.
- Monitors special service and plan effectiveness; develops, maintains, and implements alternative strategies for continued and improved Rail Operations.
- Liaises with internal stakeholders to ensure technical and operational variables are identified and are incorporated effectively into all future service plans and rail related infrastructure projects.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to improve fleet deployment strategies and long-term asset planning.
- Support incident investigations and root cause analysis for rail service disruptions.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing downtime and enhancing overall fleet performance.
- Represent Rail Service Design and liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure technical and operational variables within TSP or infrastructure plan are identified and incorporated into standard operating procedures, and contingency playbooks.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
Completion of a diploma in Business Administration or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
Demonstrated years’ progressive experience supervising and monitoring rail operations services, preferably in a public transit environment
Prior experience with TrainPlan rail mapping & timetabling and IVU resource planning software (or equivalent – Hastus, etc.) would be preferred. Training will be provided, and the incumbent is required to comfortably utilize the software. Experience with OpenTrack, or equivalent rail network simulation software would be an asset.
- Knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory requirements governing delivery of passenger rail services (e.g. Transport Canada (TC), Federal Railway Administration (FRA), American Association of Railways (AAR), American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), Ontario provincial and municipal standards and best practices, building codes, contracts, and environmental legislation) is required
Analytical skills to investigate operating problems and recommend solutions
