Full job description

Position Summary

In partnership with the Indigenous Career Pivot Program being facilitated by Workforce Warriors Inc., CN-CGA is seeking Indigenous applicants to the position of Marine Fleet Mechanical Lead & Capacity Development Specialist.

This position will provide professional marine mechanical servicing, diagnostics, and hands-on technical training to Indigenous marine search and rescue (SAR) units.

This role strengthens operational readiness while building long-term mechanical capacity within participating First Nations communities. The successful candidate will conduct structured community visits to service vessels, perform higher-hour maintenance (including 300–350 hour servicing), troubleshoot mechanical issues, and train local crew members in preventative maintenance practices.

This position combines technical expertise, independent diagnostics, mentorship, and remote troubleshooting support to reduce downtime, improve fleet reliability, and increase community self-sufficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Community Visits (10 annually)

Travel to participating Nations for structured service visits
Conduct full vessel inspections and diagnostics
Perform 300–350 hour engine servicing
Complete oil changes, filter replacement, lower unit servicing, impeller replacement
Diagnose electrical, fuel, and performance issues
Replace or repair mechanical components as required
Provide hands-on training to crew in preventative maintenance
Develop simple maintenance guides and checklists for ongoing local use

Ongoing Support

Provide virtual troubleshooting and mechanical consultation between visits
Support preventative maintenance planning and scheduling
Maintain detailed service logs and reporting documentation
Assist in parts planning and procurement
Identify risk areas and mechanical trends across fleet

Capacity Development

Mentor local crew in safe mechanical procedures
Build confidence in basic servicing skills
Support long-term reduction in emergency breakdown costs
Promote marine safety standards and mechanical readiness

Qualifications

Required:

Certified Marine Mechanic or equivalent demonstrated professional experience
Extensive experience servicing outboard motors (Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Mercury, etc.)
Experience performing 300+ hour engine servicing
Strong independent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
Ability to work in remote coastal communities
Valid driver’s license
Must own a vehicle capable of safely hauling vessels
Ability to travel

Preferred:

Experience working with First Nations communities
Experience in SAR or emergency response marine environments
Teaching or mentorship experience

Employment Details

1-year fixed-term contract
Approximately 1200 hours annually
$45.00 per hour
10 structured community visits
All travel, accommodation, mileage, ferry/flights, and per diems covered by employer
Tools expected to be provided by candidate; specialty tools may be supplied as needed
No extended benefits
