Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Shift Engineer will get the opportunity to support the operation and maintenance of a wide range of equipment critical to campus infrastructure. While operating the University’s power plant, bioenergy plant and facilities infrastructure, this position will ensure compliance with the Boiler Pressure Vessel Safety Regulations and Technical Safety BC. They will lead the response to all fire alarms, power outages, and equipment failures to ensure the control and safety of occupants of the campus facilities.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performing maintenance rounds;
- Troubleshooting process equipment;
- Undertaking preventative maintenance;
- Responding to fire alarms; and
- Operating our natural gas boilers and the bioenergy plant.
In cases where coverage is needed, the Shift Engineer will have the opportunity to perform planned maintenance on process equipment such as the vertical feed screw, metering bin, pellet boiler, pumps, fans, motors, and piping.
The successful candidate must possess a valid BC or Inter-Provincial 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate and a valid Class 5 driver’s license. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years related experience, preferably in a Commercial/Institutional environment; knowledge of computerized building control and energy management systems; and a strong mechanical aptitude. Experience in water treatment/testing and HVAC systems is required.
In addition to the above requirements, the following are considered to be an asset:
- Experience in bioenergy plant operation and maintenance;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- The ability to work in a service-oriented team environment demonstrating flexibility, and a commitment to safety in a continuously changing setting.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
This position has been classified at a Grade 8A, $36.49/hr. The casual hourly rate of pay shall be at Step 1 for the Grade when filling a position that has been rated by the Job Evaluation Committee.
As part of our casual pool of employees available on an on-call basis, you may be called in to assist during peak periods, vacation, or for sick leave coverage. The normal hours of work will require 12-hour shifts from 7:00am – 7:00pm and 7:00pm – 7:00am.
