Role Summary
The Manager, Environmental Management will provide leadership and direction to the development and implementation of environmental strategies, policies and programs that promote sustainable development, lessen environmental impacts and ensure all applicable legislative requirements are met for GO Bus Operations and Maintenance.
What will I be doing?
- Champions and acts as an advocate for environmental issues, environmental management principles and their practical application for GO Bus Operations and Maintenance; promotes environmental sustainability among staff and stakeholders
- Leads the development and implementation of the GO Bus Operations and Maintenance environmental strategies, frameworks and sustainability program in accordance with corporate and legislated environmental standard and collective agreements (where applicable)
- Oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures and systems in relation to environmental and sustainable practices; tracks and monitors legislation to ensure policies, procedures and operations are compliant and consistent with Metrolinx’ Environmental Management System and best practice
- Assesses and advises on environmental impacts of proposed initiatives and identifying appropriate actions to effectively address any issues arising from those assessments
- Leads the development of performance measures to monitor progress against environmental strategies, objectives and performance targets; identifies key sustainability issues
- Influences key stakeholders from across the organization by engaging them with the objective of reducing the organization’s environmental impact
- Maintains a network of stakeholders to promote opportunities and manage relationship sensitively when disagreements arise on program implementation issues
- Coordinates environmental aspects of projects with internal groups and external agencies to meet governing / regulatory authority requirements; incorporates external agency work on projects
Leads environmental compliance reporting and mitigation for function, quality, schedules, reporting, and approvals in coordination with internal and external authorities

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Completion of an undergraduate degree (Masters’ degree an asset) in environmental science or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
- Demonstrates experience in environmental management
- Advanced knowledge of environmental management principles to build sustainability practices that enhance Bus Services and Metrolinx’ environmental performance, including ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems
- Advanced knowledge of environmental laws, by-laws, regulations, standards, best practices, and reporting requirements, preferably within the transportation industry
- Project management methodologies to lead and manage simultaneous projects to tight deadlines (i.e. to manage the implementation of environmental initiatives) and monitor project activities for adherence to timelines and project performance objectives
- Developing and delivering environmental compliance training programs as required
Knowledge of environmental aspects of bus transportation property and facility management is an asset
