Position Summary
Planning, implementing and evaluating age-appropriate therapeutic, social, physical, emotional and intellectual recreation and leisure opportunities; which incorporate the needs and preferences of CALTC clients through individual, small group and large group intervention.
We are currently looking for a temporary casual part-time therapeutic recreationist to join our team!
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure programs and services within the Therapeutic Recreation Department are performed in accordance with the Mission Statement, Philosophy and Objectives of St. Joseph’s Villa and Ministry of Health Guidelines.
- TRs are to perform and implement under the Therapeutic Recreation Ontario, Standards of Practice.
- Ensure services are delivered in a manner keeping with the clients’ Bill of Rights and the Health Care Consent Act.
- Function as a co-operative member of the care teams for the delivery of effective, quality health care.
- Encourage clients to be independent and support them in areas in which assistance is required.
- May assists with aspects of the client’s personal care (ADL) and toileting as needed.
- Plan and implement programs that are appropriate, respectful and value individual diversity, seven days per week that includes weekends and evenings.
- Monitor and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs and services to ensure effective and efficient delivery, including the safety of clients, colleagues, volunteers and self.
- Utilize internal Villa resources and external community resources as necessary for the delivery of programs and services.
- Acquire all necessary program supplies (approved by the manager), which may include; shopping, ordering and completing requisitions in a timely and accurate manner, as per organizational policy.
- Ensure continued community involvement through small group programs, intergenerational programs, entertainment and educational bookings as permitted by current infection control practices.
- Prepares and coordinates monthly calendars, these are to be submitted to the Manager of the CALTC program for approval.
- Operate programs within assigned budget.
- Organizes program physical space, material and equipment.
- Attend and support client reviews, team meetings, other conferences and in-services provided.
- Maintain current program protocols of all programs including program purpose, description, target population, goals, resource/equipment requirements and ongoing evaluation.
- Continued advancement of personal and professional knowledge of Therapeutic Recreation through in-services, committees, and seminars, educational workshops.
- Participate in the inspection and maintenance of department resources, equipment and facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Community Program Manager.
Occupational Health & Safety
Employees of St. Joseph’s Villa are responsible for:
- Ensuring their familiarity with the Health & Safety Program.
- Ensuring that they work in a safe and healthy manner using the prescribed measures and procedures, and protective devices.
- Actively participating in the identification of workplace hazards with the aim of continuously improving the work environment.
- Attends annual mandatory Health and Safety, WHIMIS, Emergency Preparedness or other required training sessions as established by the facility. Completes all education / courses posted on SURGE Learning.
In addition to the above responsibilities, employees shall be responsible for all the duties outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (R.S.O. 1990 c.0.1).
Note: Any persons who, in their relationship with St. Joseph’s Villa, do not conduct themselves in accordance with St. Joseph’s Villa Safety Policy and Procedures will be subject to disciplinary actions.
Formal Education:
- University Degree in Therapeutic Recreation
- College Diploma in Recreation Therapy
- or Post-Graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Recreation
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s license is required
- Membership with the Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) is preferred
- Experience working in a day program setting is an asset
- Knowledge and experience working with the elderly and those living with a cognitive or physical impairment is an asset
- Basic computer skills, windows environment is an asset
- CPR & First Aid certification is an asset

Pay: $24.09 per hour
