Overview
Job summary:

The Behavioral Support Recreational Therapist (BSO) will be part of an interdisciplinary team working with the BSO Lead/assistants and will participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the BSO Program.

The Behaviour Support Program is a specialized service enhancement that has been implemented to better support older adults with or at risk of responsive behaviours. The BSO Recreation Therapy position has been created to further enhance and expand upon the scope of BSO teams. As a member of the Mississauga Halton BSO Care Community Team, the Recreational Therapist will work under the Leads guidance, and with BSO team members from other long-term care homes, the community and the acute care sectors, other external supports and other health professionals as required.

Responsible to:

· BSO Lead

· Director of Care

· Assistance Director of Care

Responsibilities:

· Demonstrate patient-family-care partner focus and commitment to the Mission, Vision,

Values and goals of BSO and Tyndall Seniors Village

· Work in collaboration with the Lead/assistants to support the development of behaviour care plans and approaches to providing care to residents requiring behavioural support as well as their families

· Plan, direct and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for residents with mental illnesses and cognitive impairment

· Participate in incorporating Montessori Techniques and a variety of modalities including arts and crafts, music, dance, games, etc to help maintain or improve the residents physical, social, and emotional well being

· Enhance the positive impact and spread of the BSO Program to assist in addressing and preventing responsive behaviours

· Work in collaboration with all necessary departments to find the best possible quality resident centered care solutions for the resident/family

· Identify and flag residents who require additional attention

· Support the spread of improvement practices with internal team members (activity, nursing) regarding overall preventions of responsive behaviours through therapeutic programming

Qualifications:

· Possess a Certificate, Degree or Diploma in Recreation/Activation/Leisure studies or related field

· Current CPR and First Aid is preferred

Additional Training/Certificate recommended:

· P.I.E.C.E.S and or U-FIRST

· Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) basics training required

· Montessori Methods

Additional Attributes:

· Demonstrates positive person-family centres values and practice

· Demonstrates a strong understanding that all behaviours have meaning

· Demonstrates knowledge working with older adults with various forms of dementia, delirium, complex mental health, substance use, other neurological conditions, including those with or at risk of responsive behaviours and the effects on care partners

· Strong communication skills and ability to communicate in a non-stigmatizing way

· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team

· Ability to positively represent and advocate on behalf of BSO in committees

· Demonstrate awareness and competencies regarding cultural diversity

· Proficient skills with Word, Excel and PowerPoint

· Good attendance and work record

· Develop resident specific care plans to further assist in those residents exhibiting responsive behaviours/or at risk.

Experience:

· Relevant clinical experience (3-5 years as recreation aide) working with older adults and care partners in long-term care setting

· Experience working within an interprofessional team model; long term care setting preferred

· Experience supporting the lived experience of older adults living with Dementia and other neurological conditions or at risk of responsive behaviours and their care partners

· Experience with electronic documentations, specifically the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) documentation, including assessments, Resident Assessments Protocols (RAPS) and care planning functions
