Position Overview
The Forestry Specialist supports the Office of the Wet’suwet’en in protecting, managing, and advocating for the health of Wet’suwet’en Yintah (territory) through the review of land‑use and resource‑development referrals. This role ensures that forestry‑related decisions respect Wet’suwet’en governance, uphold the rights and title of the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, and align with the cultural, ecological, economic and community values of the five clans and 13 house groups.
The specialist provides technical forestry expertise, conducts field assessments, and works collaboratively with internal staff, Hereditary leadership, government agencies, and industry proponents to ensure that all activities within the Yintah support long‑term sustainability and cultural integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
Referral Review & Analysis
- Review and assess forestry‑related referrals, including harvesting plans, road development, silviculture prescriptions, tenure applications, and other land‑use proposals.
- Evaluate potential impacts on forest ecosystems, culturally significant areas, wildlife habitat, water systems, Wet’suwet’en traditional land‑use and the forest economic interests of the Wet’suwet’en.
- Interpret maps, spatial data, forest inventories, and management plans to support informed decision‑making.
- Prepare clear, culturally grounded written responses that reflect Wet’suwet’en values, concerns, and conditions.
Technical Forestry Expertise
- Apply knowledge of forest harvest operations, forest ecology, silviculture, forest health, and stand dynamics to assess proposed activities.
- Conduct field visits to verify on‑the‑ground conditions, identify risks, and gather supplementary information.
- Recommend mitigation strategies, best management practices, and stewardship approaches that align with Wet’suwet’en principles and long‑term sustainability.
Engagement with Wet’suwet’en Leadership & Community
- Work closely with Hereditary Chiefs, house groups, and clan representatives to ensure referral responses reflect traditional governance and cultural priorities and are completed within policy timelines.
- Support community engagement sessions, mapping initiatives, and knowledge‑sharing processes.
- Provide technical explanations and summaries to leadership in accessible, culturally respectful language.
External Relations & Collaboration
- Liaise with provincial ministries, industry proponents, consultants, and partner organizations to clarify project details and negotiate solutions.
- Participate in technical meetings, planning tables, and collaborative stewardship initiatives.
- Represent the Office of the Wet’suwet’en in discussions related to forestry, land‑use planning, and resource management.
Data Management & Reporting
- Maintain organized records of referral files, maps, correspondence, and decisions.
- Track trends in forestry activity across the Yintah and identify areas of concern or opportunity.
- Prepare reports, briefing notes, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
Policy, Planning & Stewardship Support
- Contribute to the development of Wet’suwet’en‑led land‑use policies, stewardship frameworks, and resource management strategies.
- Support ongoing initiatives such as cumulative effects assessment, cultural values mapping, and watershed monitoring.
- Stay informed about changes in forestry legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Degree or diploma in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Registered or eligible for registration with a professional forestry association (e.g., RPF, RFT).
- Experience in forestry field activities related to harvesting such as layout, engineering, and assessments related to cutting permit development.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or within Indigenous governance structures is strongly preferred.
- Background in forestry operations, land‑use planning, or natural resource referrals is an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of forest ecology, silviculture, and sustainable forest management.
- Proficiency with GIS tools, mapping software, and spatial analysis.
- Ability to interpret technical documents, forest development plans, and environmental assessments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information into accessible language.
- Respectful understanding of Indigenous rights, title, and governance—especially Wet’suwet’en hereditary governance.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, multi‑stakeholder environment.

Working Conditions
- Combination of office‑based work in Smithers and fieldwork throughout Wet’suwet’en Yintah.

- Fieldwork may involve rugged terrain, variable weather, and remote locations.

Employment Details
