Full job description

Job Summary:
As a PEACE Children’s Counsellor at Tamitik Status Women, you will play a key role in delivering programs and services that promote safety, empowerment, and equality, with a focus on women and children. Guided by feminist principles, you will provide trauma-informed and inclusive support, working directly with clients to meet their needs and achieve program goals. Your responsibilities include implementing program activities, offering hands-on assistance, and collaborating with staff and partners to ensure accessible services. In this role, you will engage in advocacy, provide direct support, and uphold the organization’s commitment to social justice and anti-violence initiatives.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional certification in counselling, social work, or a related field.
Extensive work-related experience under qualified supervision, or participation in continuing education programs.

Certifications:

First Aid and Food Safe preferred.

Experience & Skills:

Experience working with vulnerable populations.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information.

Other Requirements:

A full driving license and access to a vehicle.
Clear criminal record check, with a commitment to disclose any changes in criminal record status.

Key Responsibilities

Counselling and Support:

Provide non-judgmental counselling based on children’s needs and individual situations in a safe environment.
Provide information and education on the cycle of abuse, power & control, types of abuse, and their effects.
Offer crisis intervention and appropriate referrals as needed.
Provide ongoing counselling for women/children, including safety planning, referrals, accompaniment, and/or advocacy.
Conduct individual and group counselling for women/children within program limits.
Respect women’s/children’s rights to their own values, beliefs, culture, and choices.
Foster the development of healthy personal coping skills.

Confidentiality and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and confidential records.
Ensure strict confidentiality of client information and any information gained through the employment relationship.
Provide monthly reports to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
Attend staff meetings, case reviews, and be present at other TSW locations.

Community Engagement and Public Education:

Facilitate and participate in VIP programming through BCSTH.
Develop a coordinated community response for women/children who have experienced violence, abuse, and threats.
Serve as a resource person to the community, association staff, and volunteers regarding women and children who experience abuse.
Initiate and assist in organizing and presenting public education activities, training, and prevention programs.
Offer presentations and participate in or coordinate relevant community committees.
Maintain current information on relevant community service providers.
Facilitate communication with feminist organizations at local, regional, provincial, and global levels concerned with violence against women.

Representation and Miscellaneous:

Represent the Society positively and professionally to internal and external publics.
Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor, ensuring alignment with Tamitik Status of Women’s mission and goals.

Wage is negotiable for the right candidate, based on fit and experience.

Pay: $32.00-$33.00 per hour

Expected hours: 27.5 – 32.0 per week
