We are looking for a proactive, collaborative and solutions-oriented individual to join our Environmental Planning team. This position is for a senior professional with a background in environmental planning.
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Planning, the Senior Environmental Planner is a leadership role responsible for supervising and coaching Planning staff, positively influencing a team of interdisciplinary staff, and providing expert opinion and advice to proponents, municipalities and other agencies on complex, long-range planning, development and policy matters.
- Responsible and accountable for file administration, plan input and review, and correspondence for complex planning files including:
- Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-Law Reviews and Updates
- Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-Law Amendments, Plans of Subdivision, and Niagara Escarpment Plan Amendments
- Aggregate Resources Act applications
- Environmental Assessments
- Subwatershed Studies and other studies and technical reports
- Provide expert planning advice and act as the technical review team coordinator for the preparation of expert technical advice on behalf of Conservation Halton at the Ontario Land Tribunal and Joint Board Hearings
- Lead, manage, or support special projects or policy planning initiatives and priority applications
- Oversee, engage, mentor and coach Planning staff to ensure CH’s objectives and policies are achieved and response deadlines are met
- Prepare staff reports and memos on complex planning matters for senior management and the Conservation Halton Board
- Support the Manager, Environmental Planning in implementing and administering key change initiatives to streamline planning reviews and use new technology to enhance the review process
- Respond to inquiries regarding the status of planning files from a broad range of stakeholders, including applicants and their consultants, agency staff, and the general public
- A university degree in planning, geography, ecology or a related discipline or equivalent
- A Registered Professional Planner in good standing with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute
- At least 6 years of progressively responsible development review and policy planning experience
- Experience appearing as an expert witness before a tribunal, court or similar
- Strong working knowledge of the Conservation Authorities Act and related regulations, Planning Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act, Provincial Planning Statement and Provincial Plans, and other related legislation
- Supervisory experience with excellent leadership, strategic thinking, dispute resolution, problem solving, analytical, negotiation and organizational skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including experience presenting complex ideas to diverse groups
- Experience developing, fostering and sustaining effective and positive relationships, both internal and external to the organization
- Ontario Driver’s Licence (Class G Minimum)
- Starting at $100,324 annually based on a 35-hour work week
