Job Overview

Job Description: Behavioural Therapist

Reports To:

Early Years Program Manager and Executive Director

Position Type:

Full-Time (35 hours per week)

Work Location:

Hybrid of In-person in the community (service areas of Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities) with services delivered in homes, community settings, childcare programs, schools, and Spirit of the Children Society program sites. 1-2 days per week working in office in New Westminster head office.

Behavioural Therapist

Job Summary

Develops, implements and maintains behavioural intervention strategies and programs for clients and provides training to caregivers to facilitate successful living in the community.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement individualized behavioural support plans based on each child’s strengths and needs.

Support children in improving communication, emotional regulation, social interaction, and daily living skills.

Observe, document, and monitor behaviours, progress, and therapeutic outcomes.

Use positive reinforcement and trauma-informed approaches to encourage healthy behaviours and emotional development.

Collaborate with parents, caregivers, teachers, Elders, support workers, and clinical professionals to ensure consistent support strategies.

Facilitate therapeutic activities that encourage self-expression, confidence, and relationship-building.

Support children during transitions, routines, and challenging situations using de-escalation and calming techniques.

Maintain accurate case notes, progress reports, and confidential documentation.

Participate in team meetings, training opportunities, and ongoing professional development.

Promote culturally safe, inclusive, and child-centered practices.

Activities and Therapeutic Supports for Children

A Behavioural Therapist may engage children in a variety of structured and recreational activities designed to support emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and social development, including:

Social skills development and peer interaction activities

Emotional regulation and coping strategy exercises

Play-based therapy and therapeutic games

Sensory activities and calming techniques

Art, music, storytelling, and creative expression activities

Routine-building and life skills development

Conflict resolution and communication exercises

Outdoor recreation and physical wellness activities

Mindfulness, grounding, and self-regulation practices

Cultural teachings, land-based learning, and traditional wellness activities where appropriate

Goal-setting and confidence-building activities

Group activities that encourage teamwork, inclusion, and positive relationship-building

Education and Knowledge

Master’s degree in counselling psychology or a related field.

Must be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)

Valid First Aid and Food Safe Certifications (or willingness to obtain before start date)

Training and Experience

Two (2) years recent related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Reliable transportation and hold valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record (Driver's Abstract required) and willing to obtain business insurance and liability coverage.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, and Outlook.
Driver’s Abstract required.
Criminal records check required.
