Position Summary
The Marketing & Communications Specialist is responsible for leading an integrated marketing and communications approach that strengthens Cheam First Nation’s image, brand, and reputation while maintaining meaningful, member-focused engagement. The role ensures Cheam is consistently represented as a trusted, forward-thinking Nation through clear, professional, and values-aligned messaging.
By translating leadership decisions, programs, and services into accessible, story-driven communications, the Marketing & Communications Specialist builds understanding, trust, and pride among Members, while also supporting Cheam’s external presence through strong organizational branding, partnership support, and employer-of-choice positioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement integrated marketing and communications strategies that strengthen Cheam First Nation’s image, and trust with Members, partners, and the public.
- Ensure consistent, recognizable, and professional branding across all internal and external communications.
- Position Cheam First Nation as a strong, forward-thinking Nation through clear, purposeful, and values-aligned messaging.
- Maintain a strong member-focused communications approach, ensuring Members see themselves, their community, and their values reflected in all messaging.
- Emphasize the importance of member engagement by providing consistent, predictable, and transparent communications that build long-term trust.
- Translate leadership decisions, initiatives, and updates into meaningful, accessible narratives that explain both what is happening and why it matters.
- Lead the development of the Annual Report, including a clear narrative lead-in that connects priorities, accomplishments, and outcomes for Members.
- Develop and deliver monthly video updates to Members to support ongoing engagement, transparency, and timely information sharing.
- Identify, elevate, and share stories that highlight the impact of work across all departments and services.
- Ensure the purpose, outcomes, and value of programs, services, and governance decisions are clearly understood by Members.
- Shift technical or administrative information into clear, story-driven content that strengthens understanding and confidence in the Band Office.
- Strengthen Cheam First Nation’s external brand by ensuring it is represented clearly, consistently, and professionally.
- Support communications related to partnerships, funding, economic development, and intergovernmental relations.
- Develop materials that position Cheam as a credible, trusted, and desirable partner to governments, organizations, and industry.
- Support media relations in collaboration with Leadership, including drafting media releases, key messages, and briefing materials.
- Promote Cheam First Nation as an employer of choice by communicating organizational values, culture, and workplace environment.
- Attend, document and share all program and events within the Nation.
- Manage and maintain the website and social media platforms using an engagement-driven, marketing-informed approach.
- Develop and oversee content calendars to ensure consistent, intentional, and strategic communication.
- Monitor engagement, feedback, and analytics to inform continuous improvement.
- Work closely with Leadership and departments to identify communication gaps, risks, and opportunities.
- Provide strategic communications and marketing support to departments to effectively convey the value and impact of their work.
- Maintain organized records of communications materials, digital assets, and brand resources.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Post-secondary education in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field or equivalent working experpeience.
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a marketing, communications, or integrated role.
- Demonstrated ability to apply marketing principles such as branding, audience analysis, engagement strategy, and storytelling.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt messaging for internal, community, and external audiences.
- Experience managing digital platforms, websites, and social media.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work in a cultural and politically sensitive environment with professionalism and discretion.
- High ethical standards and respect for confidentiality.
- Knowledge, respect, and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions, and language is an asset.
- Experience working with a First Nations community or Indigenous organization is an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Working Conditions
The Marketing & Communications Specialist primarily works in an office environment; however, the role requires flexibility in work hours. Evening and weekend work will be required at times to support community events, meetings, and organizational initiatives.
The position requires regular attendance at Cheam First Nation community events, programs, and activities for the purpose of documentation, storytelling, and engagement. Travel may be required to attend events, meetings, and partner engagements, both within and outside the community.
A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as required are essential to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
