Day Camp Counsellor
Spend your summer working on the water! The Whitby Yacht Club Sailing School is looking for Watersports Camp Counsellors (seasonal employee). The counsellors will lead a group of campers in water sport activities (including kayaking, paddleboarding, and knot tying), as well as leading evening/weekend adult paddleboarding sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a role model and represent the sailing school and Whitby Yacht Club in a positive manner.
- Organize and lead a variety of group activities each week (games, crafts, etc.)
- Leading group on-land and on-water through lessons, games and activities.
- Teaching lessons on how to paddleboard, kayak, and basic sailing to campers followed by leading them safely out on the water.
- Leading evening/weekend adult paddle-boarding lessons at least once a week.
- Ensure sites cleanliness and organization.
- Communicate with parents about campers' experiences and report concerns to Camp Management.
- Assist in creating and maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, attendance, etc.
- Other duties may arise from time to time and may be assigned to the employee.
- Experience in kayaking, or paddleboarding, or sailing is beneficial but not required -- for the right candidate we will teach you! Any water-based experience would be an asset but not required (such as experience as a swim instructor, lifeguarding, etc.)
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Approved police record check (with vulnerable sector check)
- Strong programming, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Highly motivated and willing to take initiative while functioning in a team environment.
- To be eligible, applicants must (As Per Canada Summer Jobs):
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- Successful candidates must dedicate themselves to this role for up to 10 weeks of programming.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children.
- Recreational experience in water sports (such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or sailing).
- Comfortability in and around the water.
- Ontario Boating License (Pleasure Craft Operators Card).
- CPR and First Aid training.
