The Practical Nurse assists physicians in the gastroenterology (GI) specialty. They deal with patients who have stomach or intestine problems, or those who are undergoing treatment for serious illnesses like colorectal cancer.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Maintains inventories of endoscopic equipment and supplies.
· Performs safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning.
· Prepares recovery area according to requirements.
· Positions patients in accordance with instructions from medical personnel.
· Places devices, such as blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeter sensors, nasal cannulas, surgical cautery pads, and cardiac monitoring electrodes, on patients to monitor vital signs.
· Protects patients and employees by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols; enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
· Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing.
· Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records.
· Maintains nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports; identifying trends; anticipating needed supplies; approving requisitions and cost allocations.
· Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
· Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
· Interacts with patients and answers their questions and provides health teaching.
· Electronically records physician observations.
· Advocates patients undergoing endoscopic and surgical procedures under Clinical policies for Pre-Op, Intra-Op, and Post-Op Procedures.
· Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from other health care professionals.
· Carries out administrative functions including filing, scanning, faxing, making telephone calls etc.
· Other duties as assigned.

· Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
· Ability to adhere to and follow all DHC—Standards.

· Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
· Monitoring equipment—watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
· Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
· Recognizing when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong and to take appropriate actions.
· Capability to keep your hand steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
· Capacity to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
· Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
· Collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team, including patients and their family members.
· Ability to perform duties in a professional manner.
Qualifications—Education and Certifications
Practical Nurse:
· Diploma from recognized RPN training program.
· Registered with current Certificate of Competence issued by the Colleges of Nurses of Ontario.
· Up-to- date Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training to recognize life-threatening conditions and provide CPR and other techniques.
Working Conditions
· Proper footwear (closed-toe and heel, slip-resistant, socks/stockings)
· Nursing Uniform (“Scrubs” with no patterns)
· Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
· Working with sharp instruments.
Physical Requirements
· Lifting 50 lbs or more occasionally.
