SCOPE OF POSITION
As a member of the Operations – Remote Support team the Senior Operator – Remote Support (“Operator”) will contribute to the successful operation and maintenance of the drinking water and wastewater facilities operated by Clearford across Ontario, and other parts of Canada. Reporting to the Hub Supervisor, the Operator performs essential services to the public and ensures that our operations comply with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals, orders, and guidelines. The Operator will report plant performance and complete sampling and will perform their functions and responsibilities within a team environment with the support of the Hub Supervisor, the Compliance team and other Clearford support services.
The Operator will be assigned a designated home hub and will work full-time from that location as part of the Remote Support Team. The position requires participation in a rotational schedule that includes travel to other operational hubs and company sites, where the Operator may be required to work for extended periods of several weeks at a time. Travel may include locations throughout Northern Ontario, including Pickle Lake and Moosonee, as well as other locations across Ontario and Canada, based on operational requirements.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)
- Perform all operational tasks maintenance (preventative and corrective) duties for assigned facilities, (including daily rounds, system monitoring, housekeeping, regulatory sampling and deliveries to lab).
- Communicate using strong oral and written communication skills, to clearly describe operational items to members of the public, clients, government agencies, equipment supplies, and contractors/tradespeople, as well as internal staff.
- Drive long distances, including during inclement weather.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals and orders, guidelines.
- Adjust, inspect and evaluate equipment and process performance in order to optimize efficiency and effectiveness, in accordance with established procedures.
- Inspect, repair and maintain potable water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance to required standards.
- Operate, monitor, repair and control water treatment plants, wells, pumping stations, reservoirs, valves, hydrants and meters.
- Inspect, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, including disinfection equipment, pumps and control systems.
- Operate, monitor, and repair surface Water Treatment Plants, Well-Based Distribution and Supply Systems, Pumping Stations, Reservoirs including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), various digital and analog instrumentation and control systems, numerous monitoring, reporting and communication systems, pressure tanks, filtration systems, continuous online analyzers, and related appurtenances, valves, hydrants etc.
- Operate, monitor, and repair wastewater treatment plants with varying degrees of complexity, including Moving Bed Biological Reactors (MBBRs), Membrane Biological Reactors (MBRs), Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs), Waterloo Bio-Filters (WBSs) Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs), Ultra-Filtration Membrane Filtration (UFMF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) treatment systems, Lagoons, Septic Systems, using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems along with less sophisticated control systems, and Landfill Leachate and Sewage Pumping Stations, and manholes, etc.
- Conduct water testing and sampling (bacteriological and chemical) using various meters and spectrophotometers.
- Collect, package and transport process samples in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct in-house laboratory work utilizing handheld monitors (colorimeters, spectrophotometers).
- Carry out process changes required to optimize treatment performance.
- Serve as secondary on-call contact - 1 week per month.
- Serve as primary on-call during department vacations, as necessary.
- Interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and assists with asset data collection from sites to upload into a Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Participate in the commissioning of new treatment plants, including process optimization, instrumentation and control as well as SCADA.
- Maintain logs and records pertaining to system performance and conditions, in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by using appropriate PPE and completing all required Health and Safety training.
- Promote a positive working environment, and puts forward a professional approach with the clients, establish and maintain relationships between Clearford and the client.
- Proactively, or by management request, maintain current training and pursue advanced certification.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Remote Support
- Travel to and work at other hubs or designated operational sites, as required, to provide temporary operational support, including remote locations in Northern Ontario and other parts of Canada. This may require the Operator to be away from their designated home hub and remain on location for multiple consecutive weeks at a time, depending on operational requirements.
- Perform regular operating duties and responsibilities while assigned to a location outside of the employee’s home hub.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and provide operational support, as required.
- Work flexible schedules and adapt to the operational requirements of temporary assignments.
- Support the operational needs of other hubs and sites as directed.
- Successful completion of background checks and drug and alcohol testing where required by specific site or client requirements, may be required as a condition of working at certain remote locations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, & COMPETENCIES
- Minimum Class 2 Wastewater Treatment licence.
- Minimum Class 2 Water Treatment licence.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
- Higher level of operator’s licensing, qualifications and/or experience considered an asset.
- Post-Secondary Education in the Environmental, Chemical/Biological, or Engineering field considered and asset.
- Training and certification in Confined Space Entry (CSE), Working at Heights, First Aid, Lock-Out Tag-Out, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods are considered strong assets.
- Good understanding of the latest technologies in the Water and Wastewater industry.
- Basic knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations (for example, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Drinking Water Standards, Drinking Water Protection Regulations, Safe Drinking Water Act, Spills Act, etc.).
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft software packages including Access, Project and Teams, as well as web-based data entry systems for payroll and expenses.
- Possess a strong mechanical aptitude and is familiar with various types of tools.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and a willingness to develop and grow these on the job.
- A valid Ontario Class G driver’s license, clean driver’s abstract.

Hours of work and Travel Expectations Senior Operator –
Home Hub
- The Operator will be required to work outside of regular business hours to facilitate the Operation and Maintenance of the Hub.
- The Operator will be required to perform rotational on-call duties to facilitate the Operation and Maintenance of the Hub.
- There will be frequent travel throughout the area and periodic travel to other areas in Ontario.
Remote Support
- Frequent travel to and from remote operational sites and other designated company locations, as required.
- Travel may involve air, vehicle, and marine transportation, including charter or scheduled flights, company vehicles, and boat travel where required to access remote locations.
- Travel may require extended stays at remote sites, including multiple consecutive weeks away from the Operator’s designated home base.
- Travel requirements may include locations throughout Northern Ontario and other areas of Ontario and Canada.
