Full job description

Gardenerette, formerly Country Market & Garden Centre, is a locally owned garden centre in Bowmanville, focusing on thoughtfully curated plants, seasonal experiences, and building something special for gardeners across Durham Region.

As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced horticulture professional to help lead and evolve our growing operations.

This is a hands-on role for someone with experience running or serving as a senior grower within a nursery, greenhouse, or garden centre environment. We’re looking for someone who understands plant production and greenhouse operations, systems, and is keen to experiment as we build for the future.

What you'll do:

Oversee day-to-day greenhouse and growing operations
Develop and execute production plans and growing schedules
Manage plant health, irrigation, fertilization, and environmental controls
Forecast crop needs and help guide purchasing decisions
Identify opportunities to improve systems, efficiencies, and growing practices
Advise on future greenhouse improvements, infrastructure, and operational investments
Support propagation, transplanting, crop maintenance, and inventory management
Help lead and train seasonal staff
Troubleshoot plant issues, pests, and environmental concerns
Work closely with ownership to shape the future direction of our growing operation
Jump into hands-on work alongside the team as needed

We're looking for someone who:

Has significant experience in a nursery, greenhouse, or garden centre environment
Has experience managing or acting as a senior grower
Has strong knowledge of plant production, irrigation, crop planning, pest control, and greenhouse systems
Can identify opportunities to improve operations and solve problems proactively
Enjoys building systems and helping organizations grow
Works independently and takes ownership
Is comfortable balancing strategic thinking with hands-on work
Can lift 50 lbs regularly and work in a physically active environment
Has experience leading teams or mentoring staff

Bonus points for:

Experience with greenhouse automation or environmental control systems
Experience with propagation and production planning
Knowledge of annuals, perennials, vegetables, tropicals, trees and shrubs
Experience scaling or modernizing growing operations
Familiarity with retail garden centre environments

Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
