Position Summary:
The Fiber Optic / Photonic Engineer Scientist is a highly skilled and versatile professional responsible for the full lifecycle of fiber optic and photonic products, from research and development to manufacturing optimization and quality assurance. This role requires deep theoretical and practical knowledge of photonics and fiber optics, combined with hands-on engineering and scientific troubleshooting capabilities. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, building, testing, and optimizing high-performance photonic components and systems, contributing significantly to product innovation, efficiency improvements, and quality control.
Typical Duties:
- Lead and participate in R&D design and development work for high-performance photonic components and systems.
- Prepare and analyze designs, work orders, procedures, and quality standards in a timely fashion.
- Manufacture various types of fiber optic and polarization maintaining products.
- Analyze, optimize, and characterize the optical design of products to ensure they meet specifications.
- Conduct troubleshooting and analysis of anomalies in electro-optical and optical systems, including failures related to RMAs and low productivity.
- Investigate and implement cost-cutting improvements, including reviewing process steps, introducing automation, utilizing alternative materials, and identifying ways to increase yield.
- Involve with engineers from various disciplines in the development, assembly, inspection, and testing of prototype products, ensuring ease of transfer to production (Design for Manufacturing).
- Document test results and maintain meticulous records.
- Train new Technicians and Assemblers on manufactured products and various operations.
- Interface effectively on a technical basis with Technical Directors, Production Managers, and Quality Assurance personnel.
- Monitor and track yield improvements to drive changes and improvements.
- Perform other duties as specified by management.
Education:
- Minimum: Bachelor of Engineering, specializing in Photonics or Optics/Photonics, or a related discipline.
- A Minor in Electronics or Mechanics is highly desirable.
- Equivalent work experience will be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years in a production environment.
- Experience in Fiber Optics is a major asset.
- Experience in working with a wide range of fibers (Single Mode, Multi-Mode, Polarization Maintaining, High Powered).
- Experience in working with various connectors (FC, SC, ST, SMA, E2000).
- Experience with various polishing machines and methods (Ultra-tech, Seiko, Nanometer).
- Ability to use various test equipment (Power Meters, PER Meters, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with various aspects in the assembly of Patch Cords.
Skills:
- Strong background in Optical and Mechanical Engineering.
- Solid foundation in Photonics Manufacturing.
- Proven ability to analyze and troubleshoot fiber optic patch cords and anomalies in electro-optical/optical systems.
- Hands-on manufacturing expertise.
- Excellent English communication skills – verbal, written, listening, and presentation.
- Excellent training and mentoring skills.
- Well-organized and able to work well in a group environment.
- Ability to take direction, read drawings, and follow procedures.
- Ability to work under stress in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work different hours/shifts and overtime when requested.
