Position Summary:
The Fiber Optic / Photonics Technician is a hands-on professional responsible for the manufacturing, testing, and measurement of fiber optic and photonic products. This role involves ensuring quality, yield, and productivity improvements through meticulous adherence to procedures, troubleshooting, and contributing to process optimization. The incumbent will play a key role in supporting both production and R&D efforts, including the development and building of prototypes for seamless transfer to manufacturing.
Typical Duties:
- Perform defined manufacturing, test, and measurement tasks for fiber optic and photonic products.
- Be involved in developing new and improving existing procedures to allow the maximization of production and product quality.
- Ensure that the procedures, guidelines, and quality standards are current and being followed in production.
- Conduct limited troubleshooting in related areas and assist supervisors by identifying issues.
- Participate in R&D projects and assist Engineers & Designers in the development and assembly of prototype products.
- Troubleshoot and analyze RMAs (Return Merchandise Authorizations) and production failures.
- Track and monitor yield improvements to make necessary changes and improvements.
- Investigate opportunities for improving productivity (e.g., through automation, alternative materials, increased yield, etc.).
- Monitor scrap in assigned areas and report to the supervisors/responsible parties.
- Technically train and supervise new fiber optic assemblers in various termination functions.
- Work different hours/shifts and overtime when requested.
- Perform other duties as required.
Education:
Minimum: Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Photonics Engineering Technologist / Technician Diploma) or a High School Diploma combined with appropriate experience.
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in a related field and manufacturing environment.
- Experience in high-volume manufacturing.
- Experience in Fiber Optics is a major asset.
- Experience in working with a wide range of fibers (Single Mode, Multi-Mode, Polarization Maintaining, High Powered).
- Experience in working with various connectors (FC, SC, ST, SMA, E2000).
- Experience with various polishing machines and methods (Ultra-tech, Seiko, Nanometer).
- Ability to use various test equipment (Power Meters, PER Meters, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with various aspects in the assembly of Patch Cords.
Skills:
- Primary knowledge of basic Fiber Optic concepts (e.g., fiber types, IL, ORL, PER, etc.).
- Solid foundation in Photonics Manufacturing.
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot Fiber Optic Patch cords and anomalies in Optical Systems.
- Good hands-on abilities.
- Effective English communication skills – verbal, written, listening, and presentation skills.
- Excellent training and mentoring skills.
- Ability to take direction, read drawings, and follow procedures.
- Ability to work under stress in a fast-paced environment.
