ESSE Canada is looking for a motivated Accountant to join our growing team. You will work in a fast-paced environment alongside management, supporting a wide array of business activities with a strong emphasis on accounting, but also including bookkeeping and technology adoption.
ESSE Canada is a Canadian environmental and water resource management company headquartered in Brantford, Ontario. The Company provides wastewater and drinking water management services, including the operation, maintenance, inspection and monitoring of residential, commercial and municipal water and onsite sewage treatment systems. Esse services a broad portfolio of clients across Ontario and has established long-term service relationships through recurring maintenance and compliance-based contracts. ESSE’s operations are supported by a technical field service team and are focused on regulatory compliance, environmental protection and infrastructure reliability within the water and wastewater sector.
Job Description:
This person maintains financial records and ensures that financial transactions are properly recorded. Ensures the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger. Prepares balance sheets, profit and loss statements and other financial reports. Analyzes current costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses.
Given its growth, ESSE is expanding its in-house accounting functions so the role will be exciting for an experienced individual interested in building an accounting team alongside management with robust opportunities for development and career growth over the long term.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the daily operations of accounting functions, including journal entries and maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, and fixed assets
- Prepares profit and loss statements, monthly closing reports and additional reporting as needed
- Prepares general ledger account reconciliations with relevant line-item detail and supporting documentation
- Analyzes, documents, and communicates revenue, expenditure and balance sheet trends and variances
- Prepare month‐end reconciliations, working papers and journal entries including accruals, prepayments, amortization, and other entries as required
- Analyze variances from budget, forecast and prior period to provide commentary
- Assist in the administration of payroll
- Monitors and reviews accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness
- Observes, receives, and obtains information from relevant sources to understand and support financial transactions
- Maintains and coordinates implementation of appropriate accounting and accounting control procedures
- Interacts with business units to resolve accounting discrepancies
- Regulatory filings of HST and any other applicable taxes
- Assist in preparing tax returns and corporate reporting requirements
- Continuously develop and implement process improvements, system automation, and other best practices to increase efficiency and accuracy of the corporate accounting function
- Interacts with and interacts with external accountants in completing year end financials
- Adheres to company policies, practices and procedures, and accounting standards
- Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work
- Assist with special projects and other ad-hoc requests, as required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Economics, Business, or related field required
- 1 year required, 3 years preferred of accounting experience
- Federal, provincial, and local laws, codes and regulations
- Accounting theory, and application principles and practices
- Principles and practices of financial record keeping and reporting
- Analyze and interpret complex financial and statistical data
- Research and analyze varieties of information
- Prepare, examine and verify financial documents reports
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Access.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
What you will need to succeed:
As the Accountant you will have the following experience and qualifications:
- CPA Designation or in final stages of completion.
- 2+ years experience in financial reporting and analysis with a strong preference for public accounting training
- Understanding of accounting and reporting in an early stage but fast-growing organization
- Working knowledge of corporate taxation and any relevant payroll reports
- Intermediate/Advanced MS Office skills
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Strong financial, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Achievement oriented; must be able to juggle multiple tasks, tight deadlines and changing priorities
- Self- starter who takes initiative and thrives in a fast-paced environment

Pay: $65,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
