Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Specialist to join either our Saskatoon, Regina, or Calgary team! This position will report to the

As an
Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Specialist, you will provide advanced technical expertise in the design, specification, integration, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems. You will play a key role in developing engineering deliverables, solving complex automation challenges, and ensuring that systems meet safety, reliability, and performance requirements.
This role requires strong engineering judgment, the ability to interpret and apply industry standards, and the capability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. You will support project execution from concept through detailed design and commissioning, ensuring high‑quality, compliant, and fit‑for‑purpose I&C solutions.

Position Overview
Primary Responsibilities

Develop and review I&C engineering deliverables including P&IDs, instrument loop diagrams, location drawings, and interlock diagrams.

Design fire alarm and detection systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

Prepare and review instrument datasheets, control narratives, alarm lists, and design criteria.

Select and evaluate instruments for flow, level, pressure, temperature, and chemical composition measurement and control.

Collaborate with vendors to obtain technical information, evaluate equipment, and ensure compliance with project requirements.

Interpret manufacturer manuals, circuit diagrams, and blueprints to determine suitability, testing requirements, and maintenance procedures.

Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance testing of instrumentation and control systems.

Integrate control and measurement instruments into new and existing plant equipment and processes.

Provide engineering input for proposals, cost estimates, and project planning.

Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Technical Competencies

Industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC)

Control system network design (switching, fiber optics, copper cabling)

Hazardous/classified area instrumentation design

SIS/SIL understanding and application

Proficiency with CAD and I&C tools (SmartPlant, AVEVA Instrumentation)

Continuous improvement and innovation, including identifying best practices and tools to increase efficiency
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a focus on Instrumentation, Electrical, or Controls Engineering.

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration.

Several years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls engineering.

Experience with AutoCAD® or similar design tools is considered an asset.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality engineering deliverables.

Comfortable working in mining/heavy industrial environments for field verification, data collection, and site meetings.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and within a cross‑functional team environment.

Commensurate with education and experience.
