Full job description

Position Title: Manager of Housing & Public Works

Location: Sawridge First Nation

Reports to: Executive Director

Job Purpose: The Manager of Housing & Public Works at Sawridge First Nation oversees all aspects of the First Nation facilities. This role is accountable for the efficient operation of First Nation facilities and infrastructure to support the Sawridge's administrative functions and community services. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for staff, community members, and visitors. While the position requires administrative acumen, it is also a boots on the ground role that requires competence with manual labour and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

Facilities Management:
Manage and oversee the maintenance, cleanliness, and security of First Nation facilities, buildings, and grounds.
Coordinate repairs, renovations, and upgrades as needed, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
Monitor utility usage and implement cost-effective measures to conserve energy and reduce expenses.
Office Administration:
Ensure efficient utilization of office space and resources to support productivity and workflow.
Implement and maintain administrative policies and procedures to optimize office efficiency.
Procurement and cost management.
Health and Safety Compliance:
Develop and implement health and safety protocols and emergency procedures for facilities as required.
Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
Budget and Resource Management:
Prepare and manage the facilities budget, including forecasting expenses, monitoring expenditures, and optimizing resource allocation.
Source and negotiate contracts with vendors and service providers for facility-related services and supplies.
Oversee and lead public works employees.
Community Engagement:
Serve as a point of contact for community members, staff, and external stakeholders regarding facilities and administrative matters.
Foster positive relationships with community members through responsive communication and support.
Project Coordination:
Support the planning and implementation of community projects & initiatives.
Assist in researching funding opportunities, preparing grant applications, and managing project budgets.
Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to ensure projects align with community goals and priorities.
Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and service delivery. This includes multi year planning.
Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements relevant to management and facilities maintenance.

Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Facility Management, or a related field; relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
Proven experience (3-5 years) in management, facilities management, or related roles, preferably within a First Nation or Indigenous organization.
Experience in trades and equipment operation is considered an important asset.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to supervise and motivate a diverse team.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations, building codes, and environmental sustainability practices.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite and facility management software/tools.

Working Conditions:

This position may require occasional evening or weekend work to support community needs. This is considered flex time and will be coordinated with the Executive Director.
This role is full-time in office with 9am-4:30pm Monday to Friday hours.
The role involves travel within the community or to attend meetings or events off-site.

Pay: $65,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
