R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited and Neegan Burnside Ltd. are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Water/Wastewater Engineer to join our Winnipeg office. This intermediate-level position is ideal for an engineer with 5–7 years of experience who enjoys solving practical infrastructure challenges and contributing to municipal projects from planning and design through construction. You will work with senior staff and project managers to deliver a variety of water and wastewater assignments across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, with opportunities to take on increasing responsibility in project coordination and client support.
What You’ll Do:
- Support the planning, design, and delivery of municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects (linear and vertical).
- Prepare design calculations, drawings inputs, specifications, and tender/construction contract documents.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines, subconsultants, and drafting teams to advance designs and deliverables.
- Contribute to technical reports, proposals, schedules, and cost estimates.
- Participate in field investigations, condition assessments, and data collection; interpret findings to inform design recommendations.
- Provide construction-phase support (e.g., shop drawing review, RFIs, site visits, contract administration support) in collaboration with the project team.
- Communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders and support project managers in meeting scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Support the technical development of EITs and junior team members, providing guidance on deliverables, professional practice, and technical skills.
- Contribute to studies, condition assessments, and asset management planning for aging water and wastewater infrastructure.
What You Bring:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Manitoba, or eligible for registration; EITs close to licensure will also be considered.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in consulting and/or municipal water/wastewater planning and design.
- Working knowledge of municipal infrastructure, applicable standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience developing engineering deliverables such as calculations, reports, drawings inputs, specifications, and tender documents.
- Strong organization and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate tasks and manage priorities across multiple assignments.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach suited to a fast-paced, multi-project environment; comfortable managing concurrent priorities and working across disciplines and office locations.
Preferred Skills and Assets:
- Experience with vertical (e.g., pumping stations, treatment facilities, lagoons) and/or horizontal (e.g., watermains, sewers, forcemains) infrastructure.
- Experience with treatment system design including fireflow, demands, reservoirs, mass balance, treatment supplier coordination, etc.
- Experience with construction aspects of water and wastewater projects including: site inspection, contract administration, progress payments, and project management.
- Familiarity working with Indigenous clients and communities.
- Knowledge of Manitoba regulatory frameworks for water and wastewater works, including Manitoba Office of Drinking Water (ODW) requirements and approvals under The Environment Act.
- Experience with hydraulic analysis or water/wastewater process design software (e.g., WaterCAD, InfoWorks ICM, Cormix or equivalent), would be considered an asset.
- Willingness to participate in industry events, professional associations, and contribute to the firm’s technical and community profile.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, BIM, REVIT, or MicroStation, would be considered an asset.
