The Department of Agriculture is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Supervisor Medical Technologist – Microbiology with the Animal Health and Welfare Branch - Veterinary Diagnostic Services Laboratory.
Duties:
As part of the Veterinary Diagnostic Services laboratory management team, the position leads and manages a team of Medical Technologists in an area of specialty (virology, clinical pathology, or microbiology and subsections within each section). The Microbiology section provides veterinary laboratory diagnostic services to commercial animal producers and to veterinarians responsible for the care of companion animals. Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Microbiology Supervisor manages all operations within the section including human resources, testing protocols, quality assurance, maintaining equipment and supplies, and communication to stakeholders.

Qualifications:
Essenital:
- Extensive employment related experience in clinical microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing), supported by thorough and current technical and theoretical knowledge of diagnostic principles and procedures
- Extensive employment related experience and knowledge in processing clinical specimens for microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, parasitology)
- Comprehensive experience with total quality assurance practices, including quality control procedures specific to microbiology testing
- Supervisory experience, including recruitment, training, orientation, performance management and day-to-day oversight of laboratory staff
- Knowledge of and experience with health and safety practices relevant to microbiology laboratories, including the handling of infectious materials and the biological safety and biosecurity procedures required within a Containment Level 2 facility
- Experience with troubleshooting issues related to microbiology laboratory equipment, culture methods and testing procedures, including non-conformance reporting and action plan development
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong leadership skills, including the ability to coach, train and mentor microbiology personnel
- Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing technical reports and writing standard operating procedures
- Effective verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills, including maintaining accurate laboratory records, managing confidential information and meeting multiple deadlines while ensuring accuracy, efficiency and adherence to quality standards
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), including creating and maintaining Excel spreadsheets for inventory and budget tracking
- Ability to prioritize and assign work assignments effectively within a microbiology laboratory environment
Desired:
- Post-secondary degree in biological science with specialization in microbiology would be considered an asset
- Experience working in an accredited clinical laboratory (e.g., ISO 17025 or equivalent)
- Proficiency with laboratory information management systems
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must be a Licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist, and currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM), or eligible for registration with CMLTM prior to commencement of employment
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Must be able to meet all requirements of the organization’s rabies vaccination policy
