GFT is seeking a Principal Transportation Engineer / Senior Project Manager to fill a position within our Transportation Group in Toronto. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Toronto office.

This is a senior role for an experienced transportation professional who can lead complex assignments, manage key client relationships, provide technical oversight, mentor staff, and support growth across our Ontario transportation portfolio.
The successful candidate will bring strong project delivery experience across provincial, municipal, regional, and transit-sector clients. This role is intended to strengthen senior delivery capacity, improve technical and quality oversight, support strategic pursuits, and help develop the next generation of transportation leaders within the Toronto team.
The successful candidate must be able to support GFT’s positioning on transportation pursuits and be eligible to serve as senior/key personnel for relevant MTO RAQS categories.
You will provide senior project management, technical leadership, and client-facing support for transportation infrastructure projects across Ontario. Assignments may include highway and roadway planning/design, traffic engineering, corridor improvements, municipal roads, transit-supportive infrastructure, transportation operations, safety reviews, construction staging, detour planning, and multidisciplinary infrastructure programs.
You will also play a key role in strengthening the Toronto Transportation Practice by supporting proposal development, mentoring junior and intermediate staff, improving delivery consistency, and helping the team win and deliver high-quality work.

Key Responsibilities:
Project and Technical Leadership

Lead and manage complex transportation engineering assignments for provincial, municipal, regional, and transit-sector clients.

Serve as Project Manager, Deputy Project Manager, Technical Lead, Senior Reviewer, or QA/QC Lead on transportation infrastructure projects.

Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, resourcing, deliverables, and client communications.

Provide senior technical review and direction for transportation engineering deliverables, studies, reports, design submissions, and multidisciplinary work products.

Lead or support projects involving highways, roadways, traffic operations, municipal roads, corridor studies, safety reviews, staging, detours, and transportation operations.

Coordinate effectively with roadway, drainage, structural, environmental, utility, transit, construction, and property teams.
Client and Business Development
-
Maintain and grow trusted relationships with public-sector transportation clients across Ontario.

Support strategic pursuits, proposal development, work plans, technical approaches, fee estimates, interviews, and scope negotiations.

Help position GFT for future transportation opportunities through client engagement, market awareness, and strong delivery performance.

Identify follow-on work opportunities and support account planning for key transportation clients.

Represent GFT in client meetings, technical workshops, project reviews, industry events, and pursuit interviews.
MTO RAQS and Pursuit Support

Support GFT’s ability to pursue and deliver MTO and other Ontario transportation assignments.

Contribute to MTO-related pursuits, qualifications packages, technical submissions, work plans, and project delivery strategies.

Maintain working knowledge of MTO expectations, Ontario transportation standards, agency coordination requirements, and quality management practices.
Quality, Risk, and Delivery excellence

Provide senior QA/QC oversight to improve technical consistency, risk management, and delivery quality.

Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve complex technical, contractual, and interdisciplinary issues.

Promote consistent use of checking procedures, lessons learned, design criteria, project controls, and risk mitigation practices.

Support profitable delivery by managing scope, change, budget performance, resource planning, and client expectations
Team Development and Mentorship.

Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, designers, analysts, and project managers.

Provide coaching on technical delivery, project management, client communication, quality expectations, and professional development.

Support recruitment, onboarding, knowledge transfer, and succession planning within the Transportation Practice.

Help build a stronger, more resilient Toronto team with improved bench depth and clearer growth pathways.
What you will Bring:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
-
Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, or immediately eligible for licensure with Professional Engineers Ontario.

Minimum 15 years of progressive transportation engineering experience, including significant Ontario public-sector infrastructure experience.

Minimum 8 years of project management, technical leadership, or senior delivery experience on transportation infrastructure assignments.

Demonstrated experience leading transportation assignments for public-sector clients such as MTO, municipalities, regions, transit agencies, or other infrastructure owners.

Experience managing multidisciplinary teams, client relationships, project budgets, schedules, risk, quality, and technical deliverables.

Strong knowledge of Ontario transportation design practices, agency requirements, contract delivery models, and multidisciplinary project delivery.

Ability to support strategic pursuits and contribute to winning work through proposal development, client engagement, technical approaches, and senior/key personnel positioning.

MTO RAQS eligibility is mandatory. Candidates must be eligible to serve as named/key personnel for relevant MTO RAQS categories.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting, proposal writing, client presentations, and senior review.
What We Prefer You Bring:
-
Experience serving as Project Manager, Design Manager, Technical Lead, Independent Reviewer, Senior QA Reviewer, or Client Account Lead.

Experience in one or more of the following areas: highway engineering, traffic engineering, transportation planning, municipal roads, corridor design, transportation operations, construction staging, detour planning, road safety, active transportation, or transit-supportive infrastructure.

Familiarity with Ontario engineering standards, TAC guidance, OTM books, MTO design standards, traffic analysis tools, Civil 3D, MicroStation/OpenRoads, Synchro, VISSIM, Aimsun, or similar platforms.

PMP, PTOE, RSP, or equivalent certification would be considered an asset.
What you will bring to our firm:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.

P.Eng. in Ontario, MCIP/RPP, or an equivalent professional designation, or eligibility to obtain one, is required.

10+ years of experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning, or traffic operations.
-
Experience delivering traffic engineering components of large infrastructure projects.
-
Experience leading technical teams and coordinating multidisciplinary assignments.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $130,000.00 - $163,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
