About Us
Atlas Power Technologies has spent more than a decade developing and commercializing advanced energy-storage technology. Our proprietary supercapacitor systems provide exceptionally long cycle life and extremely fast charge and discharge capability, creating a differentiated platform for demanding industrial, grid, and high-power applications. Built through long-term collaboration with Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, Atlas has developed proprietary chemistries, power-electronic systems, and controls. We are now advancing through commercial demonstrations and into the next phase of product development and growth.
We are looking for exceptional engineers who want to build reliable, secure, industry-leading technology and create the engineering foundations needed to scale our Energy Management System (EMS) product platform.
The Role
The Senior DevOps Engineer will own the architecture and implementation of the development infrastructure used by Atlas firmware, software, controls, modelling, and test teams. This is not a traditional cloud-operations role. The position is focused on embedded-product development: clean source-code repositories, controlled engineering workflows, automated build-test-release pipelines, and secure, reproducible development environments for microcontroller and EMS development. The successful candidate will work closely with firmware, software, control, system, test, cybersecurity, and IT stakeholders. The role requires someone who can establish practical standards, implement the supporting tools, migrate existing projects without disrupting delivery, and coach engineers on sustainable day-to-day practices.
What Success Looks Like
- A clear, scalable Git/GitLab/Bitbucket repository architecture for EMS firmware, application software, model-based design assets, generated code, configuration, interface definitions, documentation, test assets, and release artifacts.
- Reproducible developer and build-agent environments that can be provisioned from scripts and configuration rather than undocumented workstation setup.
- Automated pipelines that build, analyze, test, package, version, approve, and release embedded firmware and supporting software with traceability from source to deployed artifact.
- A secure development environment that protects restricted intellectual property, credentials, toolchains, dependencies, and release assets while remaining practical for engineering teams.
- Documented repository, branching, dependency, release, backup, recovery, and onboarding processes that can scale across multiple products and engineering teams.
The Responsibilities
Repository Architecture and Engineering Workflow
- Assess the existing code repositories and define a clean target architecture, including the appropriate use of mono-repositories, multi-repositories, shared libraries, submodules or package registries, generated code, binary assets, documentation, and product configuration.
- Define and implement Git/GitLab/Bitbucket governance, including naming conventions, protected branches and tags, merge-request workflows, CODEOWNERS, approval rules, release branches, versioning, tagging, and archival practices.
- Establish practical dependency-management strategies for C/C++, Python, generated code, vendor SDKs, third-party libraries, and internal reusable components.
- Plan and execute repository cleanup and migration while preserving history, traceability, active development, and released product baselines.
Embedded CI/CD and Release Automation
- Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for embedded C/C++, Python, web/backend components, model-based design outputs, documentation, and product packaging across Linux and Windows.
- Automate compilation, code generation, formatting, linting, static analysis, unit testing, integration testing, artifact publication, release-note generation, and release promotion.
- Integrate command-line builds for MCU compilers, vendor SDKs and IDE toolchains, including management of tool versions, licenses, environment variables, and cross-compilation dependencies.
- Deploy and maintain secure build runners and agents, including isolated runners, Windows and Linux builders, virtual machines, containers, and hardware-connected test stations where appropriate.
- Support automated firmware flashing, target-board testing, hardware-in-the-loop or simulator-based testing, test-result collection, and build/release traceability.
- Troubleshoot build failures and dependency conflicts, improve pipeline reliability and execution time, and eliminate reliance on individual developer workstations for official releases.
Secure and Reproducible Development Environment
- Design a reproducible engineering environment for MCU and EMS development using an appropriate combination of scripted provisioning, pinned Python environments, containers or development containers, virtual machines, and controlled vendor-tool installation.
- Create bootstrap scripts, environment manifests, base images, and validation checks so a new developer or build agent can be configured consistently and verified against an approved baseline.
- Collaborate with IT and engineering leadership on network segmentation, identity and access management, role-based permissions, secrets management, credential rotation, endpoint controls, audit logging, backups, disaster recovery, and protection of source code and design IP.
- Implement software-supply-chain controls such as dependency inventories, software bills of materials (SBOMs), vulnerability scanning, artifact retention, checksums or signing, provenance, and controlled promotion of release artifacts.
- Evaluate where containers are appropriate and where Windows virtual machines or controlled physical hosts are required because of licensed vendor tools, USB/JTAG access, hardware drivers, or real-time test equipment.
Documentation, Support, and Continuous Improvement
- Prepare and maintain architecture documents, operating procedures, repository standards, pipeline documentation, environment setup guides, release procedures, and recovery instructions.
- Train and support engineers in Git, code review, branching, dependency management, reproducible builds, release discipline, and secure-development practices.
- Define measurable health indicators for repositories, pipelines, build agents, test coverage, release quality, and developer onboarding; identify and remove recurring sources of engineering friction.
- Coordinate with external tool vendors and internal stakeholders for operating systems, networks, servers, licenses, cybersecurity requirements, and infrastructure support.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Five or more years of relevant hands-on experience in DevOps, build/release engineering, software-development infrastructure, or embedded-product development.
- Demonstrated experience designing and administering Git-based development workflows, preferably with GitLab and self-managed runners or comparable enterprise tooling.
- Strong experience building automated CI/CD pipelines using Python and at least one of Bash or PowerShell.
- Strong Linux and Windows systems knowledge, including automation, permissions, services, networking, virtual machines, containers, storage, backup, and troubleshooting.
- Practical understanding of embedded C/C++ development, cross-compilers, build systems such as CMake, Ninja or Make, vendor SDKs, and command-line build automation.
- Experience creating reproducible development or build environments with pinned dependencies and documented toolchain versions.
- Experience with artifact and package management, release versioning, build logs, test reports, and traceability between source, build, test, and release outputs.
- Working knowledge of secure-development and software-supply-chain principles, including least privilege, secrets handling, dependency scanning, SBOMs, artifact integrity, and auditability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work constructively across firmware, software, controls, test, cybersecurity, and IT teams.
Preferred Assets
- Experience with MCU or real-time embedded platforms such as TI Sitara/ARM Cortex-R/M, FreeRTOS, or similar technologies.
- Experience automating Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio, MCU+ SDK, compiler toolchains, JTAG/debug probes, board flashing, or hardware-connected CI runners.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink code generation, model-based software development, generated-code integration, or licensed engineering toolchains.
- Experience with embedded communications and industrial systems, such as CAN/CAN-FD, Ethernet, UDP, TSN, Modbus, DNP3, or IEC 61850.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop, SIL/PIL testing, lab orchestration, test-equipment integration, or automated acceptance testing.
- Familiarity with NIST Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), IEC 62443-4-1, SLSA, ISO 27001, or comparable secure-development and supply-chain practices.
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum product-development teams and supporting controlled releases across multiple products or customer programs.
