The Central Heating &Cooling Plant within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Instrumentation Technologist.
Energy and Utilities department, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that the Power plant is maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.
This position reports to the Maintenance Team Leader. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
The Instrumentation Technologist is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment and systems. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands. Problems encountered are from moderate to high complexity due to a vast scope of equipment and systems to be maintained, as well as a wide range of system variety from antiquated, obsolete equipment, up to and including pneumatic and electrical ABB systems. The diverse workload involves operational deadlines, shifting priorities, and simultaneous organization, all of which can impact the performance of each facility or group of facilities.
The normal shift is 8 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfer to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on stand-by. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies.
This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 metres, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms that may require performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
The primary purpose of this position is to support the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team in completing daily coverage for the Building Management System (BMS) and all other building automation and control systems as applicable. The daily support includes the completion of work orders within a timely manner as determined by the O&M Service Level Agreement (SLA).
This position works within a multi-trade Zone team reporting directly to the Maintenance Team Leader.
The incumbent provides instrumentation and controls technical support that includes review and consultation on specifications, purchasing hardware as required, field installation assistance, field commissioning, DCS hardware design, software programming, control panel design, field implementation, commissioning and control loop optimization.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Daily monitoring of ABB system activity for respective operations and software updates. Repairing, maintaining, testing, diagnosing faults, calibrating, and adjusting both pneumatic and electronic controls systems according to manufacturers' specifications. Ability to cover shifts as required for the operation of the 1st class Power plant.

Completion of on-site preventive maintenance routines for the ABB components and systems

Ensures the work assigned is completed as required by the standards of the trade, meeting all codes and University specifications, standards and procedures.

Follows required University and OH&S safety procedures and ensures personal, public, and co-worker safety when completing tasks.

Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment within the industry, as they become relevant to the operation of the University.

Provide customer service to internal according to university and departmental standards and expectations by pleasantly and respectfully interacting with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community as well as evaluating customer satisfaction

Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in safe working order.

Discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail are required attributes.

Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.

Ensures that personal hygiene, attire and grooming are appropriate for the work environment.

Is willing to learn and adapt to change and is expected to actively participate in own training and development in coordination with the department.

Qualifications / Requirements:

Must have a Diploma in Instrumentation Technology. Preference may be given to candidates also possessing Journeyman Electrician credentials, and a 3rd class Power engineers certificate.

Minimum 3 years of progressive experience working with automatic valves, actuators, positioners, pneumatic and electronic controls, air handling units and ABB 800 xA programming experience.

Solid knowledge of industrial instrumentation, level sensors, flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature meters and detection instruments.

Strong Experience troubleshooting and repairing Control and Automation systems.

Ability to work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers.

Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks.

Ability to listen to and understand information, ideas and to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.

Proficiency in using Microsoft office suite including Word & Excel, e-mail, mobile communication devices, such as iPhone, smartphone etc.
