Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
U School is a program run by the University of Alberta Senate that introduces and connects students in grades 3 through 9 from socially vulnerable, Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) and rural communities to the University of Alberta. Classes, with their classroom teachers, attend a week-long immersion experience on campus led by our U School staff team. Each week's unique schedule is built around the teacher's application, Alberta curriculum and the many opportunities available at the U of A.
Reporting to the U School Program Lead, the Classroom Facilitator will be responsible for U School student engagement and safety, student journals and activities, classroom leadership, teacher support and engagement, volunteer support and recognition, detailed record keeping, related administrative tasks, and the creation of positive working relationships with participating Faculties and campus units. In collaboration with the U School Program Lead, this position serves as a key contact for U School student participants, teachers, parents, school administrators, program volunteers, and presenters. Please note that travel to various schools will be required.

Hosts U School classes on campus during scheduled times.

Welcomes students to campus; facilitate weeklong site-based learning experience for up to 35 students, their classroom teacher and adult supervisors in classes from grades 3 to 9.

Supports student engagement and ensures student safety in cooperation with the class teacher.

Ensures an inclusive experience throughout the week for all students with different needs and abilities.

Problem-solving in response to daily shifts in classroom student and volunteer dynamics.

Reviews U School guidelines and expectations with all participants; collects required forms from teachers; ensures classes arrive at sessions around campus in accordance with provided schedule.

Leads 'Explore the U' sessions; creates concrete connections to the University of Alberta for U School participants.

Administers student evaluation of the program; distributes week-end materials to teachers (thank you lists, evaluations, classroom certificates).

Assists with all aspects of U School convocation celebrations each June.

Provides teacher support and engagement through the week on-site and throughout the year; connects with incoming U School teachers prior to scheduled week.

Completes pre-visits and post-visits with each class, including a minimum of two separate one-hour sessions at each school supporting each class for a full year U School experience.

Maintains frequent communication with teachers; ensures U School Program Lead is included in all communication with teachers; co-plans and leads sessions at Teacher Development Day.

Leads and supports U School volunteers: sends reminder emails and recognition notes to presenters, classroom mentors, and interviewees, answers questions about week as required.

Prioritizes volunteer recognition, including assisting with informal appreciation events, student thank you cards, class emails, and letters of reference.

Builds and sustains networks on and off campus for current and future U School programming.

Provides U School administrative support, including: updating weekly volunteer, student and teacher records on a regular basis; assisting with all aspects of program preparation as directed by U School Program Lead including classroom schedules; organizing files with student photos and projects; assisting with U School program promotion and volunteer recruitment; and keeping records of student work for reporting and promotional purposes.

Acts as an informed ambassador for U School with all sponsors and community supporters; supports the U School Program Lead at sponsor events and in sponsor conversations.

Assists with Senate special events and programs, including opportunities where U School and other initiatives of the Chancellor and Senate intersect.

Performs other duties as required by the U School Program Lead.

Bachelor's degree in Education preferred; minimum related bachelor's degree; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

2 or more years of related classroom or program facilitation experience preferred.
-
2 or more years experience in leadership roles with large groups of students (up to 35 learners) is an asset.
-
Experience or familiarity with socially vulnerable populations is an asset.
-
Experience in supporting volunteers and volunteer communities is an asset.

Familiarity with University of Alberta North Campus is an asset.

Excellent facilitation and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Demonstrated competencies in the areas of teamwork, professionalism, results orientation, flexibility, and adaptability.

Excellent presentation and organizational skills.

Proficiency with Google suite and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license.

Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years.

The Senate Portfolio Initiatives Coordinator is the operational support to the Chancellor and Senate. The U School Program Lead oversees all aspects of the U School program and supervises two U School Program Facilitators.
