About the Role:
The Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs, 3D models, and engineering drawings for material handling equipment, custom conveying machines, and process equipment from concept through to production. This role requires strong proficiency in CAD software, an understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet functional, safety, and cost requirements. The Mechanical Designer will also be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining design standards to improve efficiency, consistency, and quality across projects.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Use Autodesk Inventor / Vault / 2D AutoCAD/ SolidWorks to create drawing specifications in line with the needs of the client.
- Develop designs based on project requirements, engineering calculations, and industry standards.
- Establish, document, and maintain mechanical design standards, templates, and best practices.
- Review design concepts with stakeholders to incorporate feedback and improvements.
- Ensure designs meet applicable codes, safety regulations, and manufacturing capabilities.
- Work closely with manufacturing, purchasing, and quality teams to ensure designs are optimized for production.
- Maintain accurate documentation, revision control, and design records.
- Participate in design reviews, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for design processes and standards.
- Generate Bill of Materials (BOM) for both purchased parts and raw manufactured materials as required.
- Look for ways to complete jobs in a more efficient manner.
- Coordinate with purchasing and production to ensure part quality and timing.
Qualifications, Skills, and Attitude:
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
- Experience creating drawings for a fabrication shop environment.
- Knowledge of mechanical components, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience in developing and implementing engineering or drafting standards is an asset.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
- Knowledge, application and adherence to technical and safety standards, industry best practices and regulations in George A. Wright’s field of business.
- Adhere to company and customer site safety protocols, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and actively participate in safety training and hazard prevention practices. Ensure that Good Manufacturing Practices are adhered to at all times.
Working Environment
- Office-based with occasional visits to manufacturing or client sites.
- Collaborative, fast-paced design team environment.
Please note, this is an in-office position and is currently based out of our head office at 21 State Crown Boulevard, Scarborough ON M1V 4B1. However, we will be relocating to a new facility in Newmarket, ON in Spring 2026.
