Full job description

Structural Steel Draftsman & Project Support Specialist

Our client is a well-established engineering and construction firm specializing in structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects. They are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Draftsman to join their team.

This role is a hybrid position that blends drafting, estimating, and project coordination. The successful candidate will produce precise shop drawings, erection plans, and fabrication documents while supporting estimating and project management teams.

Responsibilities

Produce accurate shop drawings, erection plans, and 3D models for structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects using software like AutoCAD, Advance Steel, or Tekla.
Interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings to develop detailed fabrication and installation plans.
Create material lists, bolt schedules, weld symbols, and connection details following industry standards and project specifications.
Collaborate with engineers, fabricators, and site teams to resolve design conflicts and ensure constructability.
Update drawings based on RFIs, design changes, or site conditions.
Perform quantity takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and related components.
Assist in preparing cost estimates, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
Review tender documents and specifications to identify scope requirements and potential risks.
Support bid preparation by assembling tender packages and clarifying scope with suppliers.
Help project managers with scheduling, tracking milestones, and monitoring project progress.
Prepare and maintain RFI logs, change order logs, and progress draw statements of value (SOVs).

Qualifications

Diploma or certification in Structural Steel Detailing, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
2+ years of experience in structural steel or miscellaneous metal drafting.
Experience working in fabrication shops or construction sites an asset.
Background in supporting project management or estimating functions is a strong plus.
Familiarity with BIM workflows and 3D modeling is an asset.
