THE POWER OF A UNION PENSION
Why It’s One of the Most Valuable Parts of Your Pay
When comparing jobs, most people look only at hourly wage.
Smart tradespeople look at total compensation — and the pension is one of the most powerful financial advantages you can have in this industry.
At Wilcox Door Service Inc., our technicians are covered under the Ironworkers Ontario Pension Fund.
For every hour you work, the company contributes $6.16 per hour (2024 rate) directly toward your retirement.
This is:
· Paid by the employer
· Not deducted from your wages
· Automatically invested
· Built to grow over your entire career
HOW THE PENSION WORKS
For every hour worked:
$6.16 is contributed to your pension.
If you work approximately 2,000 hours per year:
$6.16 × 2,000 = $12,320 per year contributed toward retirement
Over time, those contributions accumulate and grow through investment returns.
This happens automatically — you do not need to manage it, remember to invest, or make personal contributions for it to grow.
TAX ADVANTAGES – WHY THIS IS SMART MONEY
1. You Do NOT Pay Tax on Pension Contributions Today
If we paid you an extra $6.16/hour as wages instead:
· You would pay income tax immediately
· CPP and EI would apply
· Your net take-home would be reduced
But pension contributions:
· Are not taxed as current income
· Grow tax-deferred
· Compound over time
That means the full $6.16 per hour goes to work for your future — not the government.
2. You Typically Pay Tax Later — At a Lower Rate
When you retire:
· Your income is usually lower than during peak working years
· Pension income is spread over time
· You are often in a lower tax bracket
In simple terms:
You avoid high-income tax today and instead pay lower retirement-level tax later.
That is tax efficiency.
UNION VS NON‑UNION – REAL COMPENSATION COMPARISON
Below is a simplified comparison of two hypothetical job offers:
OPTION A – NON-UNION SHOP
Hourly Wage: $40.00
Pension: $0
Benefits: Basic or Self-Managed
Retirement Savings: Up to You
Long-Term Retirement Structure: None
Annual Earnings (2,000 hrs): $80,000
Retirement Contribution from Employer: $0
OPTION B – UNION POSITION (WILCOX)
Hourly Wage: $35.81
Employer Pension Contribution: $6.16/hr
Total Package Value: $42.60/hr
Structured Benefits: Yes
Retirement Savings: Automatic
Annual Wage Earnings (2,000 hrs): $71,620
Annual Pension Contributions: $12,320
Total Annual Compensation Value: $83,940
At first glance, Option A looks higher per hour.
But Option B:
· Pays more in total compensation
· Builds $12,320 per year toward retirement
· Creates long-term wealth automatically
Over time, that difference becomes life-changing.
20-YEAR FINANCIAL PROJECTION EXAMPLE
Let’s look at a realistic long-term example.
Assumptions:
· 2,000 hours worked per year
· $6.16/hr pension contribution
· 20-year career period
· Conservative 5% average annual investment growth
Annual Contribution: $12,320
After 20 years of contributions with 5% growth:
Estimated Pension Value: ~$405,000 – $430,000
This does NOT include:
· Potential wage increases
· Overtime hours
· Higher negotiated future pension rates
· Additional voluntary retirement savings
Extend that to 25–30 years and the value increases significantly due to compounding.
This is how tradespeople retire with security instead of uncertainty.
THE POWER OF COMPOUNDING
Money contributed early grows the most.
A technician who starts at 25 and stays consistent can build substantial retirement wealth without ever needing to actively manage investments.
The earlier you start, the stronger the effect.
WHY STRUCTURE MATTERS
Many tradespeople in non-union roles say they will invest on their own.
In reality:
· Life expenses take priority
· Saving becomes inconsistent
· Retirement planning gets delayed
A structured pension removes that risk.
It builds wealth automatically — every hour, every week, every year.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
Your wage pays you today.
Your pension pays you for decades after you stop working.
When comparing jobs, always look at:
1. Hourly wage
2. Employer pension contributions
3. Long-term financial security
A strong pension is not just a benefit — it is a financial strategy built into your career.
At Wilcox Door Service Inc., we believe skilled trades deserve:
· Competitive wages
· Structured benefits
· Pension growth
· Long-term financial stability
Because a real career should support you — not just today, but for life.
