As we expand our product offerings, we seek a talented Senior Electronics Developer to join our team.
Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled Senior Electronics and Electrical Developer to lead the design and optimization of battery modules. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and development of Battery Management System (BMS) electronics and associated electrical integration architecture for stationary and mobile battery energy storage systems (BESS). The role includes system-level integration of battery subsystems with switchgear, contactors, protection devices, power conversion systems, and external control interfaces. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including embedded firmware developers, mechanical engineers, production engineers, and quality analysts, to deliver innovative solutions in the rapidly evolving field of battery technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electronics design and development of the Battery Management System (BMS) and supporting electrical components from concept to production, considering robustness, fail-safe capabilities, cost optimization, procurement flexibility, serviceability, and manufacturability.
- Lead electrical integration activities for stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including coordination of battery packs, BMS, switchgear, contactors, protection systems, auxiliary power distribution, and external customer interfaces.
- Develop and review electrical architectures, wiring diagrams, harnessing concepts, interconnect schemes, and low-voltage/high-voltage distribution strategies for integrated energy storage systems.
- Collaborate with power systems, mechanical, and controls teams to integrate batteries with PCS/inverters, switchgear assemblies, HVAC systems, fire protection systems, and site-level monitoring/control infrastructure.
- Support specification, selection, and validation of electrical protection and switching components including relays, contactors, breakers, fuses, disconnects, pre-charge circuits, and switchgear interfaces.
- Conduct detailed analysis and simulations to evaluate design performance, identify potential issues, and optimize designs for efficiency and reliability.
- Collaborate with mechanical and firmware developers to integrate embedded firmware and mechanical components within battery modules, ensuring seamless functionality.
- Define and execute testing plans to validate design concepts, assess performance under various conditions, and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Participate in system commissioning, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and validation activities for integrated stationary energy storage systems deployed in field environments.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design processes, reduce costs, and increase development efficiency.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the electrical development team, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
- Stay current with emerging trends in battery technology, materials, and manufacturing processes, incorporating relevant advancements into development strategies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred); P.Eng. certification is an asset.
- 15+ years of experience in circuit design and development, preferably focused on battery systems or related technologies.
- Experience with electrical integration of stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), industrial power systems, or high-voltage battery platforms.
- Proficiency in EDA and CAD software tools (e.g., OrCAD, Altium, Allegro, etc.).
- Expertise in analog and digital design, including power supply design, embedded circuit design with microcontrollers, analog sensing, and digital communication interfaces.
- Familiarity with switchgear, power distribution architectures, protection coordination, isolation strategies, and electrical safety considerations in energy storage systems.
- Experience interpreting and developing electrical schematics, single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring diagrams, and interface control documentation.
- Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), preferably in the automotive or energy storage industry.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to battery design and safety (e.g., UN, IEC, UL, UL 9540, UL 1973, NFPA 855, IEC 62933).
- Working knowledge of utility-scale or commercial/industrial energy storage integration practices, including interaction with PCS/inverter systems and site controllers, is considered an asset.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience with project management methodologies and tools such as JIRA and Confluence is a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to motivate and inspire team members.
- Six Sigma, Lean, or other quality certifications are advantageous.
