Our Vision

The Canadian Mental Health Association provides mental health education and mental illness recovery-focused programs and services for people of all ages and their families. We work collaboratively to develop realistic community awareness of homelessness and provide housing opportunities for clients. CMHA Kamloops creates awareness, provides education, and supports individuals and families living with mental health or substance use concerns. Our programs are community-based, they include supportive and independent living, homelessness services, and peer support. By working closely with other community agencies, we are working to bridge gaps in mental health care and facilitate access to critical services and resources.

The Role

The Indigenous Case Manager plays a vital role in supporting residents, with a dedicated focus on addressing the unique needs of Indigenous clients within a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and distinctions-based framework. Serving as the primary point of contact, the Indigenous Case Manager supports residents facing housing instability, mental health challenges, addiction, and socio-economic barriers.

By fostering trust, cultural connection, and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, the Indigenous Case Manager collaborates with residents to assess needs, link them to resources, and provide holistic, client-centered care. Working within a multidisciplinary team, this role promotes stability and inclusion while honoring the traditions, values, languages, and lived experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct culturally safe, trauma-informed case intakes with residents, building rapport and working collaboratively with them to outline goals and develop personalized plans that address challenges such as homelessness, substance use, mental health, and socio-economic barriers.
Advocate for residents' needs by referring them to appropriate community resources and collaborating with external organizations, Indigenous communities, Elders, and knowledge keepers to ensure access to essential and culturally responsive services.
Embed Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) principles and Indigenous healing practices into all aspects of service delivery, ensuring services are respectful of the traditions, values, languages, and lived experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.
Use the Vulnerability Assessment Tool to assess client needs, identify risks, and collaborate with community partners, including Indigenous organizations, to coordinate holistic and culturally appropriate services.
Provide culturally safe services to diverse populations including Indigenous, Métis, Indo-Canadian, and LGBTQ2S individuals, ensuring all interactions are trauma-informed and grounded in cultural humility and reconciliation principles.
Build and maintain meaningful, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, and knowledge keepers to support holistic client wellbeing and promote community integration.
Keep accurate and timely records of client interactions and progress, assist residents with documentation, forms, and applications, and ensure confidentiality in all aspects of case management.

Key Skills and Experience Required

Related Degree or Diploma in Human Service or related field or a combination of education, training and experience;
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in case management, housing management, and/or shelter assessment, including case management and advocacy. Experience within the community a plus.
WHIMIS, First Aid Level 1, Food Safe & Naloxone Training
Criminal Record Check
MHFA Required
Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
HEP B Vaccination Required
