About FRAFCA:

The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association is a non-profit organization that provides a diverse range of culturally safe and supportive services to Aboriginal people in Surrey and the Fraser Salish region. The Friendship Centre works from a decolonizing perspective, and as such, works to strengthen family bonds between generations and within the family.

About Surrey:

The City of Surrey is one of 21 municipalities in Metro Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. We are located on the Lower Mainland on the south side of the Fraser River and share a border with the United States of America. Surrey is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Salish Peoples, including the qicəy (Katzie), qʷɑ:nƛən (Kwantlen), and Semiahma (Semiahmoo) land-based nations.

Position Summary:

The AIDP Consultant provides early intervention support to Indigenous families with infants and young children experiencing developmental delays or exceptionalities.

The consultant works directly with families through home visits, developmental assessments, and parent education, supporting caregivers in enhancing their child’s development through culturally grounded, family-centred approaches.

The AIDP Consultant collaborates with health professionals, early intervention providers, and community programs to ensure children and families receive coordinated services and supports.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Make home visits to families to assess infant development and plan with parent’s ways to stimulate or enhance their child’s development and monitor the child’s progress.
Administer developmental assessments and write reports and recommendations. Assessments include the DAYC-2 and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) developmental screening tool.
Make referrals to other early intervention support services for the child and family when needed and support the family through the process.
Attend medical appointments for the child with the family when culturally appropriate or requested by the family.
Work in conjunction with other professionals including ASCD and early intervention services to support the child and family through family centred practice.
Strengthen and support Aboriginal families in their role as decision makers on behalf of their children and themselves.
Be a resource person to parents and blend traditional and contemporary parenting practices and connect parents with other programs that FRAFCA offers such as the AECD parent drop-in, Aboriginal head start program and Pre and Post-natal groups and Family Night.
Possess strong time organization, oral and written communication skills and be able to keep ongoing accurate client records and monthly reports.
Provide written monthly reports to Program Manager.
Participate in monthly AIDP case management meetings and staff meetings.
Attend staff in-service workshops/external training opportunities as directed by Program Manager.
Provide resource materials to parents/guardians on ways to blend traditional Aboriginal cultural practices and contemporary parenting practices effectively.
Attend and facilitate monthly drop-in play groups
Attend culturally appropriate information training sessions to enhance knowledge and education.
Education sharing to address the issues faced by the parents and families who have children with exceptionalities.
Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Diploma or undergraduate degree in a related field such as:
Early Childhood Education
Child and Youth Care
Social Work
Psychology
Human Development
Experience working with infants, young children, and families.
Experience supporting children with developmental delays or exceptionalities is preferred.
Experience conducting developmental screenings or assessments is an asset.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of early childhood development and developmental milestones
Familiarity with developmental screening tools (DAYC-2, ASQ, etc.) preferred
Understanding of family-centred and strengths-based practice
Knowledge of community resources and early intervention services
Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Strong organizational and time management skills

Additional Requirements:

Familiarity with Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community practices is an asset
Understanding of the socio-economic issues affecting urban Indigenous families
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
Ability to pass a Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector check
