Overview
RiverFlow Dredging is seeking a Watchkeeping Mate with a demonstrated ability to manage assigned duties promptly and efficiently. This position will be based on the RiverFlow Spirit, a trailing suction hopper dredger that will commence operations in the Fraser River in June 2026.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Watchkeeping Mate’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Taking charge of a navigation watch.
- Handling / maneuvering / navigating the vessel.
- Supervising the dredging operations and optimizing production and the continuity of the vessel.
- Verifying the vessel’s position.
- Entering all pertinent details into the Bridge Log, as they occur.
- Checking operation of all navigational aids: radar, depth sounder, GPS, radios.
- Monitoring depth of water when approaching land or dredging.
- Maintaining a good lookout for traffic or dangers.
- Giving sufficient traffic warning to other vessels and checking traffic conditions in confined and/or restricted areas.
- Being responsible for all elements of the dredging operation.
- Monitoring the stability characteristics of the vessel during the dredging operation.
- Ensuring day shapes and navigation lights are properly displayed.

- Minimum–Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal
- Certificate of Proficiency in Advance Fire Fighting
- Certificate of Proficiency inMarine Advanced First Aid
- Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime Commercial) ROC-MC, minimum
- Eligible to be added to Pacific Pilotage Authority Coastal Waiver from Compulsory Pilotage
- Eligible to work in Canada
Working Conditions
- 12-hour days with overtime as required
- Unionized position with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild
