Position Overview
Think Immersion Education is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Ontario Certified Teacher to serve as a Qualified Proctor for official mathematics competitions administered by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS).
This is an in-person, fixed-term position based in Oakville. The successful candidate will supervise students during official CMS competitions and communicate directly with the CMS regarding proctor approval, secure competition materials and post-competition procedures.
This position is subject to approval by the Canadian Mathematical Society. The successful candidate must be willing to provide the CMS with a current copy of their provincially issued teaching certificate and any other information reasonably required for proctor verification.
2026 Competition Dates
We are currently seeking proctoring coverage for the following CMS competitions:
- Thursday, October 1, 2026 – Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition (CLMC)
- Thursday, October 29, 2026 – Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC)
- Thursday, November 19, 2026 – Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC)
Exact reporting and competition times will be confirmed in advance.
Candidates who are available for all three competition dates are preferred. Applicants who are available for only one or two dates may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
The Qualified Proctor will be responsible for:
- Communicating directly with the Canadian Mathematical Society by email
- Providing the CMS with a current copy of their provincial teaching certificate
- Completing any proctor confirmation or verification procedures required by the CMS
- Receiving or securely downloading official competition materials
- Maintaining the confidentiality and security of all competition materials before, during and after the competition
- Arriving before the scheduled competition time to prepare the examination room
- Verifying student attendance and identification when required
- Explaining competition rules and permitted materials to students
- Ensuring that students do not use mobile phones, calculators or other prohibited electronic devices
- Continuously supervising students for the entire competition period
- Accurately monitoring the official start and end times
- Maintaining an appropriate, quiet and fair testing environment
- Documenting and reporting any irregularities or suspected rule violations
- Collecting and accounting for all competition papers and answer sheets
- Scanning, uploading, packaging or returning competition materials according to CMS instructions
- Following Think Immersion Education’s student-safety, emergency and confidentiality procedures
- Performing other reasonable competition-related administrative duties
All required preparation, scanning, uploading and competition-related administrative time will be paid.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Hold a current Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Registration
- Be a member of the Ontario College of Teachers in good standing
- Be able to provide a current copy of their Ontario teaching certificate
- Be willing and able to communicate directly with the Canadian Mathematical Society by email
- Not be related to any student they will supervise
- Be available to supervise the competition in person at our Oakville location
- Demonstrate excellent professionalism, reliability and attention to detail
- Be able to follow official competition procedures precisely
- Be comfortable using email and basic scanning or document-upload technology
- Be able to protect confidential and secure competition materials
- Have strong written and spoken English communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are considered assets:
- Previous experience supervising examinations or standardized assessments
- Current or previous teaching experience in an Ontario elementary or secondary school
- Experience working with school-aged students
- Mathematics teaching experience or mathematics qualifications
- A current Vulnerable Sector Check
Mathematics teaching qualifications are an asset but are not required, provided the applicant meets the CMS Qualified Proctor requirements.
CMS Approval Requirement
Employment in this role is conditional upon the candidate being approved by the Canadian Mathematical Society as a Qualified Proctor.
The CMS may contact the candidate directly to:
- Verify their teaching credentials
- Confirm their agreement to act as the official proctor
- Provide secure competition materials and instructions
- Confirm competition administration and material-return procedures
Until CMS approval has been received, the candidate cannot act as the official Qualified Proctor for the competition.
