IGNITION MARINE IS EXPANDING! JOIN THE TEAM AT THEIR BRAND NEW LOCATION AT THE SHELTER ISLAND MARINA & BOATYARD!

Are you an expert in marine diesel systems with a passion for troubleshooting and high-performance repair? Our valued client, Ignition Marine, is seeking a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic to handle the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, generators, and auxiliary equipment. In this hands-on role, you will work on a wide range of vessels—from pleasure yachts to commercial ships—ensuring optimal performance and strict compliance with marine industry standards. You will bring strong technical expertise and a commitment to safety, reliability, and world-class quality.

The broad scope of expertise extends to specialized offerings such as marine repowering, insurance claim repairs, professional skipper services, and canvas fabrication, all supported by a team of certified marine engineers and technicians focused on high-performance quality control.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You are the technical expert keeping the fleet powered and operational. Your responsibilities span from routine maintenance to major overhauls. Specific duties include:

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Diagnose, repair, and service marine diesel engines, transmissions, generators, and propulsion systems; Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, fuel, cooling, exhaust, and electrical systems using manufacturer software and electronic diagnostic equipment
Maintenance & Overhauls: Perform preventative maintenance, scheduled service work, and complete engine rebuilds; Remove, disassemble, inspect, and reinstall diesel engines, marine gearboxes, shafts, propeller systems, and steering mechanisms
Testing & Sea Trials: Conduct engine inspections, alignments, performance testing, operational assessments, and post-repair sea trials
Documentation & Compliance: Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics; Prepare detailed condition reports, repair recommendations, and maintain accurate service records and work orders; Ensure all repairs comply with Transport Canada regulations and manufacturer standards
Field & Emergency Support: Assist with vessel haul-outs, emergency repairs, and occasional after-hours service calls to support vessel operations and customer needs

THE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES YOU BRING:

You are a meticulous mechanic who understands complex diesel systems and takes pride in getting the job done right.

Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic, Marine Mechanic, or Diesel Technician, with strong hands-on experience servicing diesel engines and marine propulsion systems
Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of preventative maintenance programs, marine auxiliary systems, and proficiency with diagnostic software; You have a proven ability to read service bulletins, schematics, and wiring diagrams to resolve complex issues
Certifications (Preferred): Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification, Marine Engine Technician Certification, or specific manufacturer certifications (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Volvo Penta, MAN, MTU) are highly preferred)
Additional assets include Transport Canada marine systems knowledge and safety certifications (Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, First Aid)
Physical & Environmental Readiness: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work in marine facilities, shipyards, and confined engine rooms
You can work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Professionalism: Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multiple trades, vessel owners, captains, and project managers under pressure
