Process Combustion Systems Inc. (PCSI) of Calgary, Alberta is inviting applications for the position of:
Intermediate Mechanical Designer
This is a full-time, in-office position with Canada's premier combustion systems engineering, service & integration firm.

As a recognized industry leader, we have a vast history of successful projects and experience that includes turnkey combustion systems for all industry sectors, retrofits of combustion systems & advanced control systems for Industrial & Institutional fired equipment clients. PCSI maintains a full engineering contingent in Calgary which is also our center for Sales, Manufacturing, Testing and Services.
What you can expect:
PCSI offers industry leading service in western Canada in a variety of industries including mining, pulp and paper, oil and gas, manufacturing, district heating /utilities, and food production. We are located in Calgary, Alberta. This position will add to our mechanical design team, where you will work both independently and collaboratively depending on the task, budget and project schedule. This is primarily an in-office, design-focused role based out of our Calgary facility. Travel is minimal; however, occasional visits to job sites may be required to support design verification, installation support or completion of as-built drawings.
Working with PCSI, you will gain hands on experience and valuable process knowledge of industrial burner, boiler, mine air heating and dryer systems ranging in size from 1 mm BTU/Hr to 500 mm BTU/Hr. This role is a highly technical, SolidWorks-driven design position focused on the detailed mechanical design of fabricated systems, weldments, sheet metal enclosures, and process piping packages. You will work alongside industry leading engineers, designers and fabricators where valuable knowledge can be gained and your design work will be respected in our industry.
We utilize the latest technologies, PLCs and instrumentation in our systems. Our facilities are complete with the most advanced testing capabilities in the industry that allow us to develop our designs and test fire new burner technologies right here in Calgary.
Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Ensure project milestones are adhered to for smooth project execution and excellent customer service;
- Design fabricated mechanical systems, structural weldments, sheet metal enclosures, and process piping packages for combustion and fired equipment applications;
- Actively participate in design reviews, project update and closeout meetings;
- Design piping and fuel train systems in compliance with applicable industry codes
- Ensure all fabricated components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry code standards and PCSI design standards
- Generate 3D models by interpreting detailed P&ID drawings
- Develop detailed 3D models of complete packages in SolidWorks – including parts, assemblies, weldments, sheet metal components, routed piping and tubing – using best-practice SolidWorks techniques (top-down design, configurations, design tables, and proper mating strategies)
- Produce and review detailed, fabrication-ready 2D drawings, including weldment details, bills of materials, and piping spool drawings that can be manufactured by our shop and third-party fabricators without rework
- Accountability for dimensional accuracy and tolerancing of all models and drawings
- Accountability for maintaining drawing schedules;
- Work closely with project managers to ensure accuracy of scope
- Liaise with fabrication shop, purchasing and third parties to ensure accuracy/quality of final product.
- Help to develop, maintain and follow company design standards.
- Provide support to the mechanical design team with drawings and recommendations on changes
- Be an active participant in the company's safety program.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in mechanical engineering technology, or a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with demonstrated practical/hands-on design experience
- Minimum 3 – 5 years of hands-on mechanical design experience in an industrial environment, designing fabricated equipment, weldments, sheet metal and piping packages
- Expert-level SolidWorks proficiency is critical – you should be the person other designers come to with SolidWorks questions. Strong command of part and assembly modeling, weldments, sheet metal, routing (piping/tubing), large assembly performance, drawing automation, and design tables/configurations
- Strong mechanical aptitude, demonstrated through hands-on mechanical experience – shop work, fabrication, welding, machining, equipment maintenance automotive/motorcycle/equipment repair, or similar practical background
- Working knowledge of pipe & fittings, weldment design and sheet metal fabrication practices
- Direct experience in designing for manufacture: knowledge of steel manufacturing processes, and there limitations is critical. Fit-up clearances, weld gaps, bolt clearances, thermal expansions/warping of carbon VS. stainless steels and how they will impact your design choices
- Experience designing piping systems in compliance with CSA B149.1, CSA B149.3, ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 is highly desirable
- AutoCAD proficiency for P&ID and legacy drawing work
- Strong attention to detail and organization

Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
