Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Project Estimator to join our dynamic construction team. The Jr. Project Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for bids, proposals, and active projects. This role plays a key function in supporting operational decision-making and ensuring project profitability. The Jr. estimator will analyze drawings, contracts, specifications, and site conditions to determine the cost of labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and indirect project expenses.

This position requires strong analytical skills, deep knowledge of municipal construction practices, and the ability to collaborate closely with project managers, field supervisors, procurement, safety, and senior leadership.

Responsibilities

Estimating & Proposal Development

Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for municipal construction projects, including mechanical, structural, civil, and multi-discipline scopes.
Review engineering drawings, specifications, RFP/RFQ documents, and addendums.
Conduct quantity take-offs using industry-standard software and tools.
Source material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing; evaluate vendor proposals for completeness and compliance.
Assist in developing proposal packages, bid submissions, alternatives, and value-engineering options.

Project Analysis & Planning

Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and constructability reviews.
Identify production rates, labour requirements, and equipment utilization based on historical data and current industry standards.
Analyze risks, constraints, and uncertainties to advise on contingencies and project strategies.
Collaborate with project managers during project handoff to ensure seamless transition from estimating to execution.

Internal Collaboration & Communication

Work closely with operations, safety, procurement, and finance teams to ensure estimates reflect BCI procedures and standards.
Communicate clearly with clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders regarding scope, pricing, and project details.
Support business development initiatives by providing estimating insights during client discussions and proposal strategy sessions.

Education

Post-secondary diploma or degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field is an asset
Gold Seal Certification in related field or equivalent designation is an asset.
Valid safety certifications (CSTS, WHMIS) are an asset but not required.

Experience

3–5 years of estimating experience in municipal construction (water and wastewater projects).
Experience with mechanical, structural steel, civil, or multi-discipline projects.
Proven experience preparing detailed estimates and bid submissions for projects up to $1M.

Skills

Strong proficiency in estimating software
Advanced Excel skills; ability to build detailed costing models.
Strong understanding of labour codes, productivity standards, and industrial construction methodologies.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, 3D models, and technical specifications.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy.
Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Pay: $85,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
