Job Title: Dietitian, Perinatal and Community Health
Job Type: 0.6 - 0.8FTE, Permanent Position
Work Arrangement: Hybrid role, a combination of work from home and in-office
The Dietitian, Perinatal and Community Health provides nutrition expertise to support healthy pregnancies, infant feeding, and early childhood nutrition. The final FTE (0.6 – 0.8 FTE; 21 – 28 hours/week) for this position will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate, based on their availability and organizational needs. Through individual and group education, coaching, and community-based initiatives, the Dietitian promotes perinatal nutrition, healthy gestational weight gain, positive birth outcomes, breastfeeding/chestfeeding, infant and toddler feeding, healthy family eating practices, and nutrition for growth and development. The Dietitian provides nutrition guidance tailored to the developmental needs of infants and young children and supports families in building knowledge, skills, and confidence related to feeding and nutrition. The Dietitian develops and delivers evidence-informed nutrition resources and programs, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams (social workers, nurses, and other human services professionals) and community partners, and supports pregnant people, caregivers, parents and families to make informed decisions that contribute to positive health outcomes. The Dietitian is part of the Perinatal Health & Wellness Team and works closely with other Kindred staff and community organizations to reduce barriers to public health and nutrition services, increase health literacy, and support culturally relevant, family-centered care.

Provide one-on-one and group-based education on topics such as: prenatal nutrition and nutrient requirements in pregnancy; management of common nutrition-related pregnancy concerns (nausea, vomiting, heartburn, constipation, food aversions); food safety during pregnancy; healthy gestational weight gain; postpartum nutrition and recovery; breastfeeding/chestfeeding and infant feeding support; infant and toddler feeding, including responsive feeding practices, feeding readiness and milestones; nutrition for growth, development, and healthy eating behaviours; maternal, infant and child vitamin supplementation; nutrition assessment and guidance related to dietary restrictions and cultural food practices; support access to nutritious, culturally relevant, and affordable food choices.

Provide individualized nutrition consultation and support to individuals and families, including assessment of nutritional needs, development of nutrition goals and care plans, implementation of recommendations, and ongoing follow-up and evaluation.

Reduce, where possible, geographic, financial, and language barriers for clients, and place an emphasis on warm, genuine, trauma-informed interaction in accordance with the guiding principles, including supporting clients to access internal and external resources;

Demonstrate a high standard of service for prospective and current Kindred clients presenting with various concerns through various methods of contact (email, phone, in-person) by developing and implementing health promotion and awareness activities related to nutrition for targeted populations;

Contribute to a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental atmosphere for clients, students, interns, and staff, including providing consultation and training opportunities;
Administrative (25%)

Complete accurate and timely data collection and data entry in client database, maintaining complete client records of engagement;

Utilize applicable measurement tools for monitoring service impact and reporting outcomes;

Maintain working knowledge of current food and nutrition community resources that work to support the diverse population served;

Consultation with supervisor, colleagues, natural supports and other professionals;
Agency and Collaboration (10%)

Create and maintain strong working relationships with community partners and other agencies within the sector, including service providers, health care providers, Indigenous health partners, and others, to enhance integrated care for pregnant and parenting families;

Contribute to program planning, evaluation, knowledge-sharing and capacity building activities within the perinatal sector;

Participate in individual and group supervision, team/agency/division meetings, committees, live observations, and professional development opportunities;

Positively represent Kindred with sector partners, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders, including on partner sites, at networking meetings, and community events;

Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in Nutrition, Food Science, and/or Dietetics;

Registered and in good standing with the College of Dietitians of Alberta;

Experience providing care to pregnant and parenting individuals and families, in both individual and group settings;

Takes a posture of Cultural humility in working with diverse populations; experience with Indigenous and/or Immigrant families is an asset;

Experience working with individuals and families navigating barriers such as poverty, systemic inequality, and trauma an asset

Understanding of public health nutrition, strength-based care and health promotion

Ability to work independently, multi-task and prioritize in a dynamic and fast-paced environment

Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
