G Visser & Sons is a potato farm and packing operation located in Orwell Cove on beautiful Prince Edward Island. For over 40 years, we have been growing potatoes of all colors, shapes, and sizes in rich red PEI soil. We have built a solid reputation of consistently growing quality potatoes, or spuds as we often call them, for both the fresh table market and for seed. Our packing operation washes, grades, and packs potatoes to be enjoyed throughout Canada, the United States, and Puerto Rico. We have a longstanding reputation with retailers, distributors, co-packers, and customers for providing exceptional quality, and having the capacity and flexibility to deliver what they need, when they need it. On our farm, sustainability and stewardship are not just buzzwords but are values that shape our operation and culture. In addition to potatoes, we grow a wide variety of rotation crops including corn, grain, and soil builders.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Quality Assurance Technician

Summary Description

The Quality Assurance Technician will be part of our Pack Shed production staff and work closely with the Quality Assurance Manager to monitor and ensure potato quality.

The Quality Assurance Technician will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and recording potato samples taken from the potato packing lines. This role requires an energetic individual who is attentive to detail, can perform some mathematical calculations, and can be trained to identify potato defects.

Major Tasks Responsibilities

· Perform regular quality checks as directed by the Quality Assurance Manager

· Analyze, sort, and catalogue samples by defect type

· Record and report data from all analyses and tests in the prescribed time and form and maintain statistical records in accordance with QA procedures

· Communicate results regularly with the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure proper measures are taken during the grading process to pack product to be within specified tolerances

· Adhere to food safety, allergen, sanitation, and employee safety policies and procedures

· Maintain digital records of quality checks performed

· Assist the QAM in preparing documentation, records, and facilities for CFIA, Canada GAP, and other external audits, and ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions.

· Assist the QAM by filling out compliance reports for Food Safety programs.

· Understand how to optimize your efforts and manage your time so that your area operates as efficiently as possible

· Work as part of a team and execute your role with a sense of pride and ownership (care for equipment, attention to detail, etc.)

· Maintain clear, accurate, up-to-date records of all information.

· Maintain order and tidiness in areas of operation

· Support Quality Assurance Manager as needed

Education/Qualification and Experience

· High School Diploma

· Experience in quality grading is an asset

· Familiarity with HACCP principles and/or formal HACCP training

· WHMIS training is preferred.

· First Aid training is preferred

· Excellent oral and written communication skills

· Operate a computer and perform web-based data entry

· Detail-oriented

· Dependable

· Team player

· Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with managers, truck drivers, employees, etc.

· Ability to listen to instructions, follow directions accurately, receive feedback, and modify behaviour accordingly.

· Ability to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends when required)

· Willing to pitch in to help get the job done regardless of the task

Language Requirements

English, bilingual (Spanish) an asset

Salary Range

$ 20.00 - $ 25.00 per hour, depending on relevant experience, training, and/or education.

Work Hours

Monday – Friday, 7:30 – 5:00

Average Hours/Week: 45

Days Off Per Week: 2

Overtime: Payable at 1.5X when required
