JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of an Environmental Advisor.
Reporting to Section Manager Environment Health and Safety, this position is responsible to develop, maintain, implement, monitor, and improve performance of the OPG Environmental Management System by developing, coordinating, supporting, and providing oversight on OPG environmental managed systems and programs. Provide expertise and support to the Generating Units and Functions in managing OPG's environmental management programs and environmental performance; including interpretation and advice on legislation and policies, identifying and correcting environmental performance issues, assessing and reporting on environmental compliance and performance, establishing effective relationships with external and regulatory environmental agencies, and obtaining EA approvals and other approvals and permits.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop, implement, monitor, and improve environmental management systems and programs across areas such as waste, spills, contaminated lands, biodiversity, emissions, approvals, fish, endangered species, and ozone-depleting substances.
- Maintain and review environmental governance, documentation, compliance programs, and EMS performance across Generating Units and Functions.
- Provide environmental expertise, legislative interpretation, policy advise, and support to resolve performance issues and improve compliance.
- Liaise and negotiate with regulatory agencies to obtain, influence, and manage permits, approvals, regulations, and licenses.
- Prepare, analyze, and coordinate environmental compliance reports, performance reports, executive communications, and public-facing environmental information.
- Monitor environmental performance using compliance data, metrics, audits, self-assessments, reviews, and non-conformance reporting to identify issues and improvement opportunities.
- Conduct and coordinate environmental studies, project support, training requirements, budgets, business plans, and advice to senior management and stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 4 Year University degree in an appropriate field of Engineering or Science
- Requires experience related to environmental planning and approvals processes, particularly within an environmental management system, programs, and strategies.
- Requires related experience in environmental management performance, including identifying and resolving environmental issues and recommending improvements as appropriate.
- Requires experience coordinating Generating Units and Functions to establish metrics, develop targets, respond to current and emerging environmental issues, and champion environmental performance improvement opportunities.
- Requires demonstrated experience scoping, establishing, managing, and executing environmental systems and environmental study programs.
- Requires demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, including team committee effectiveness, with over 2 years of related work experience.
- Requires experience supporting the development and implementation of corporate biodiversity initiatives, including environmental management systems, regulatory processes, and climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives.
- Requires the ability to travel to remote project sites, conduct analytical reviews, research, reporting, compliance monitoring, ISO 14001 procedure development, biodiversity certification support, site visits, and EHS regulation review coordination.
