The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region (ASDR) is a community support service organization that provides programs and services to people living with dementia and their care partners in Durham Region. We work closely with other service providers to ensure quality care and support for our clients to achieve our mission to improve the quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their care partners.
We employ administrative and fund development staff, educators, social workers, social service workers, nurses, occupational therapists, recreation staff, and volunteers who work together as a team to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their care partners.

The Accounting Coordinator reports directly to the Manager, Finance & Administration and will primarily be responsible for accounting support. The Accounting Coordinator may also assist the Manager, Finance & Administration in other areas such as budgeting, preparation of financial reporting, or the audit as required.
What you will be doing
- Lead accounting functions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger transactions.
- Perform General Ledger account analysis and reconciliation.
- Review, prepare and issue vendor payments in accordance with limits of signing authority policy, including receiving appropriate invoice coding and signatures.
- Prepare one-off client invoices within the client database as required. Apply client payments accurately within accounting software and client database; reconcile accounts at month-end and prepare a monthly A/R aging report.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliation within accounting software and obtain Treasurer signature.
- Review credit card statements and generate monthly credit card reconciliation within accounting software.
- Provide monthly credit card statements and backup documentation to appropriate signing authority.
- Assist with budget process including set up of budget files and gathering of information relating to budget items as required.
- Assist in the preparation of financial reports including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for review.
- Follow accounting policies and procedures to ensure accurate recording & receipting of all revenue transactions including but not limited to those generated through fund development & special events.
- Assist with the preparation and filing of financial government reporting including but not limited to annual Charity Return, Canada Revenue Agency reporting.
- Responsible for payroll accounting entries including but not limited to employee expense reimbursements, group health benefits and RRSP entries, bi-weekly pay entries, accruals, and allocations.
- Responsible for the reconciliation of payroll data to general ledger accounts with guidance from the Manager, Finance & Administration.
- Prepare audit documentation and assist with other audit activities including but not limited to work with the external auditor.
- Assist in the development of business process maps of key accounting procedures incl. flow charts, guidelines, or procedure listings.
- Active participation in agency related meetings providing follow up action and involvement as designated
- Work collaboratively with colleagues
- Participation and involvement in key agency fundraising events as required
Other duties
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
What you will bring along
Education:
- Completion of a University Degree or College Diploma with a specialty in Finance or Accounting an asset
- Certificate in Bookkeeping an asset
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of related experience
- Not for Profit accounting knowledge an asset
- Excellent analytical skills
- Detail oriented and hands-on approach
- Highest standard of ethics and confidentiality
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal)
- Demonstrated proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook
Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:
- Knowledge of accounting transactions and GAAP
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Current Ontario driver’s license and daily access to a vehicle
- Clear vulnerable persons check
Travel Requirements
- Successful candidates must be prepared to travel throughout Durham Region
- The occasional offsite training/meeting may require travel within Durham Region.
Physical Demands
- No special physical demands are required beyond the performance of general office duties
