Kitchen Manager/Cook Job Description

Position Type: Full-time (Monday – Friday, 7:30am - 1:30pm)

Position Summary

The Kitchen Manager/Cook is responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily food service operations in a senior living facility. This includes planning and preparing nutritious noon meals Monday through Friday, supervising kitchen staff, ensuring compliance with all public health, food safety, and workplace safety standards, and maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming kitchen environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and compassion for seniors, while upholding high standards of quality, safety, and service.

Key Responsibilities: Meal Preparation and Service

Plan, prepare, and serve balanced, nutritious lunches for residents, guests, and staff (Monday–Friday).
Develop menus in accordance with residents’ dietary needs, preferences, and Ministry of Health nutrition guidelines.
Adjust recipes and portion sizes to minimize waste and control costs.
Ensure all meals are prepared on schedule and served at appropriate temperatures and presentation standards.
In charge of ordering and/or grocery store shopping for all ingredients.

Kitchen Management & Supervision

Oversee day-to-day kitchen operations, ensuring smooth and efficient workflow.
Supervise, support and work Collaboratively with the Assistant.
Maintain accurate records of menus, food usage, and inventory.
Monitor supply levels and place orders as needed while staying within budget.
Conduct regular staff meetings and training to reinforce kitchen standards and safety procedures.

Health, Safety, and Sanitation Compliance

Ensure full compliance with Public Health Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS requirements.
Maintain an organized, clean, and sanitized kitchen, storage, and dining area at all times.
Adhere to proper food handling, storage, and labeling procedures, including temperature monitoring.
Ensure all kitchen equipment is cleaned, maintained, and operated safely; report any maintenance issues promptly.
Conduct regular inspections and participate in internal or external health inspections.
Maintain up-to-date Food Handler Certification and ensure all kitchen staff are similarly certified.
Enforce all infection control policies, including proper handwashing, glove use, and illness reporting protocols.

Administrative Duties

Prepare and maintain food production records, cleaning logs, and safety checklists.
Monitor and control food and supply costs.

Resident Relations

Interact positively with residents and staff, responding courteously to special requests and feedback.

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role (institutional or seniors’ food service preferred).
Valid Food Handler Certification (required).
Safe Food for Canadians or equivalent training (an asset).
Strong knowledge of nutrition, food safety, and infection control standards.
Ability to manage staff and work collaboratively in a team environment.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Physically able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs.
Reliable vehicle and drivers license required.

Work Environment

Monday to Friday, 7:30am - 1:30pm
Fast-paced kitchen environment with exposure to heat and cleaning chemicals.
Interaction with seniors, staff, and visitors on a daily basis.

Consistent adherence to safety and sanitation standards.
Meals prepared and served on time, meeting nutritional and quality expectations.
Positive leadership and teamwork within the kitchen.
Effective cost control and inventory management.
Positive feedback from residents and compliance with all inspections.

Pay: $20.00-$23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 per week
