Reporting to the Supervisor, Transportation, the Van Driver is responsible for the safe operations of the CCD vehicles in compliance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and Regulations and CCD client safety policies while supporting a safe, courteous, door to door transportation experience for clients to CCD programs (i.e., Adult Day Program, medical appointments, etc.). The Van Driver is required to participate in and attend on-going defining client safety training and maintaining certification requirements.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Provides safe, courteous door to door transportation for clients and goods (medical appointments, grocery stores, etc.);
- Assists with ambulation and transfers on and off the van, particularly those with mobility issues;
- Secures passengers wheelchairs, stretchers, or other mobility devices to restraining devices;
- Ensures compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations while driving;
- Communicates effectively with clients, volunteers, and staff to ensure a positive experience;
- Performs daily circle check of the vehicle and reports any concerns or malfunctions (inspects lights, tires, oil, and washer fluids daily prior to commencing first pick-up, and at the end of shift);
- Reports damage occurrences and identifies potential problem areas regarding vehicle, ramp, or restraint systems to supervisor;
- Follows routine precautions for infection prevention and control including proper hand hygiene;
- Follows applicable standards of practice for the profession regarding safe application of assessment protocols, therapeutic techniques and techniques for direct handling of clients;
- Follows established routes and schedule as provided by the scheduling team;
- Maintains accurate record of any incidents or concerns encountered and communicates with supervisor;
- Reports and contravention of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and associated regulations or the existence of any hazards;
- Adheres to all Community Care Durham Transportation policies, procedures, and guidelines;
- Represents Community Care Durham in a professional manner and demonstrates respect and empathy towards all clients.
Qualifications required:
- Required documentation to support a Class G, Ontario Driver's License and clean 3-year Drivers Abstract, police check, current CPR and First Aid certificates, proof of 3 years driving experience with clients (letter from previous employer will suffice)
- Knowledge of aging and disabilities issues, sensitive to needs of aging and persons with disabilities
- Knowledge of local community and surrounding road systems
- Knowledge of policies on emergency responses
- Knowledge of vehicle maintenance
- Ability to provide physical assistance to high-need clients (pushing of wheelchairs, assistance with walkers, etc.)
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Health Declaration Form required
- Physicians’ Health Statement
- Sensitivity to the needs of the vulnerable population with disabilities, including challenges in cognition
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check completed within the past 6 months. (Please note: 4–6 weeks processing time)
- Must work in a safe manner and promote the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, clients and the community as outlined within CCD policies
Compensation: Hourly base rate of $21.00; with an additional 5% in lieu of benefits, and 6% vacation pay
Hours of Work: Casual (up to 35 hours/per week)
