Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director, Office of Campus Safety this position is responsible for coordinating private and public security services on campus, as well as interacting with external emergency services and law enforcement providers. As the Manager of Public Safety & Security, they will ensure that all security personnel have appropriate licensing, training and documentation of qualifications, will oversee the day-to-day execution of duties, and will provide leadership to a 24/7 workforce. The incumbent will conduct internal investigations and will follow up on outstanding security issues by liaising with staff, faculty, and students. On a daily basis, they will analyze incident reports submitted by security providers and will provide appropriate direction or recommendation. They will ensure that current and relevant training is carried out for all contract security on site.
This position is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive campus security framework that addresses security and safety on all Durham College and Ontario Tech campuses. They will be responsible for maintaining operations and integrity of the C.C.T.V. and access control systems.
The incumbent is also responsible for defining and implementing policies and procedures that will ensure effective communication of emergency response and security procedures. They will be an operational member of the Emergency Management Response Team. In addition, they will be the primary point of contact for external agencies including DRPS, EMS, and the Fire department in the event of an emergency.
This position is responsible for providing investigative support to the Manager of Student Conduct in response to allegations of non-academic misconduct while ensuring access to external remedies. Accreditation and/or experience in sexual assault investigations an asset. The incumbent will participate in the management team’s daily assessment of incidents and determine and delegate to appropriate individuals or agencies for investigation and/or resolution.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a baccalaureate degree, preferably in criminal justice or a related field. They will have a minimum of 15 years of related experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a management capacity. The incumbent will demonstrate strong leadership, cultural sensitivity, organizational, and decision-making skills. They will have experience in conducting independent investigations, as well as an understanding of the current and proposed legislation as it relates to private security providers, mandatory licensing and training requirements. The incumbent is required to have experience and/or knowledge of the Incident Management System (IMS) and incident management protocols. Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications skills, and a proven ability to work well with clients and colleagues are essential. Experience in the education sector is an asset.
